Robert Aldrich's Emperor of the North (1973), has arrived from Fox via Twilight Time, and while we should be thrilled to have another hole in the Aldrich filmography plugged with a quality Blu-ray, the film isn't prime Aldrich. I'd love to have his version of The Flight of the Phoenix.
The depression-era drama, starring Lee Marvin and Ernest Borgnine is an interesting tale, with some wonderful production work.
Of special interest to film buffs, the train sequences were shot in many of the same locations in Cottage Grove, Oregon, that were used by Buster Keaton for The General.
With the exception of the main title sequence, which looks just a tad soft (it's a dupe after all), the film looks superb on Blu-ray, with proper grain, color, black levels, etc.
For Aldrich fans this is a must own.
