THE HOLE (Joe Dante):

Good presentation of a film apparently shot in native 3D but never (or rarely) seen in this country that way. My Panny plasma had a few ghosting issues with it, but overall this is a good disc. No real pop-out, but there is some excellent depth. Did the 3D enhance the story for me, after having seen it first in 2D? Yes. Definitely worth a purchase if you're a Dante fan (Dick Miller even has a wordless cameo). It's pretty cheap on Amazon France (the Euro is more devalued against the dollar right now). No 2D version is included, but you can get that in the U.S. for next to nothing if you need it. Live action.

THE YOUNG AND PRODIGIOUS T.S. SPIVET (Jean-Pierre Jeunet):

Delightful live-action movie with extraordinary (native) 3-D effects throughout. I was anticipating more ghosting issues based upon Robert Crawford's warning in his excellent review, but encountered only minor ones on my Panny. Not only do the 3-D effects pop out, so does the amazing, saturated color. Why this hasn't received even a 2-D release in the U.S. is beyond me, as it is an English-language production and would be a marvelous entertainment for children in this country who are starved for movies that actually have imagination and a point of view. But be careful, if you want the 3-D edition, not to order the 3-disc set, which has the 160-page storyboard booklet (!) but not a 3D disc. You need the 5-disc edition (link below), which is not cheap, but this will hold a special place on your shelf and in your heart. 2-D version and DVD are included, along with tons of extras.

MINISCULE: VALLEY OF THE LOST ANTS (2013)

What a lot of fun this is!! The backgrounds are all shot live action (and in native 3D), and the ants and other elements added in using CGI, to stunning effect. Not any real pop-out here, but, again, delightful depth in gorgeous deep forests of France. And here's a novelty: there is not a word of dialog, so the film is absolutely universal. That's right -- the ants don't speak. Even the brief appearance of a pair of humans at the beginning is wordless, like the opening of the Pixar movie UP. Makes you wish Disney had gone in that direction with DINOSAUR. Fine music score only sweetens the cake. Kids will love this, and so will you. 2-D version is included.

FURST DER DAMONEN (aka FORBIDDEN EMPIRE, aka VIY) (2014)

My opinion: about half of this movie rocks. It is dripping with the kind of medieval atmosphere that was present in BEOWULF, but this one is pure live-action rather than motion-capture, and it actually takes place at the start of the 18th century. Filmed mostly in Russia (though the default language is German. An English track with subtitles can be accessed). Action-packed with action that is actually well-done and interesting, although the editing is often too-quick for a 3D film (you mind takes a certain added amount of time to process a 3D image). OK, the script isn't exactly inspiring (in fact, it's sometimes a little insipid), but the film sports terrific native dual-strip 3D images. 3D and 2D versions included, as well as bunch of German-language supplements.
