Browsing through new release today, and I see that the dread Fox Cinema Archive has now released what it says on the cover is a 3-Film Collection, although there are only two films; THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE ARE FREE and 3 BRAVE MEN. It's a 2 disc set, so I assume they're trying to get rid of all those dang pan-and-scan copies of BEST THINGS. Why not just spit in our faces and say it's raining? Ugh.

This must be a mistake about the publishing, otherwise, one disc is missing. Pretty strange.

And the Widescreen haters at Fox are up to it again! I just noticed that they've scheduled a
FOX CINEMA ARCHIVE release of the 1960s gem JOANNA. I recently purchased a Region 2 DVD of
this delightful film, and my first thought was "Well, wouldn't you know." Then I checked the
ratio. Yep, you guessed it. It's in pan-and-scan. Fox, which pioneered the use of Cinemascope,
continues to spit in the face of those who'd love to see it's amazing wide-screen library of films
in their original ratio. I guess buying an All-Region player was a good idea after all. Meanwhile,
stay warned. Fox Cinema Archives hates you!

I'd already heard that the "Joanna" DVD was pan-and-scan. Other than ticking titles off some Fox executive's list, what purpose could this possibly serve? The more someone loves this movie, the less happy they'll be with this disc. Wouldn't Fox make more money licensing their product to companies like Shout! Factory or Twilight Time that know and care about doing such things well?

David: One would think so, but it appears that the woman in charge of the Fox Film Archives actually HATES old films.
With such inspired leadership, all one can do is warn others away from pan-and-scan DVDs, and hope that this horrid
person is replaced. By the way, that kick-line at the train station, during JOANNA's closing credits, is just as
delightful as ever. I remember when the movie was first released, people were halfway up the aisle when the trains
pulled away. Boy, was there a rush back to the seat, and HUGE applause at the end.
