It also explains the dreamlike attention-deficit that no plotline ever seems last more than five or ten minutes out of a single episode--

And perhaps subconscious thoughts about mortality caused all that incessant harping on religion during the late 90's...Which is how the "enemy" of his chirpy-neighbor annoyance Flanders could suddenly take the form in Homer's mind of a larger-than-life stereotypical Religious-Right whipping-boy after the fourth season. ;)

This is basically the, "and then the protagonist actually died here and the rest of it is like an Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge" theory.

Anything to make excuses for the decline in writing quality. Most of these fan theories aren't canon anyway, and this is more of a hypothesis. I don't think the current writing staff is even good enough to have pulled off something like this.

Their inability to structure a single plot predates 1993, but Flanders wasn't Flanderized until much later. That was right around the time it became the "let's get more and more outlandish as long as we still get laughs until we write ourselves into a corner by act 3" show. They couldn't do an episode like "Homer Loves Flanders" today.
