I was in Best Buy last week, just after they opened. They were blasting a Klipsch center and bookshelf combo, and they didn't sound half bad from across the store. I walked over and started pressing selector buttons to see what else was hooked up (at my Best Buy it's hit and miss), and was surprised that the Sony SSCS5 speakers seemed to be holding their own against the Klipsch trio. Seriously, they sounded damn good. Not to mention they also are quite attractive. Anyone else heard these?

I've heard that these sound good but every time I'm in the BB they don't have the display hooked up properly. I tried a few different stores around Christmas but no luck. I might have to go back some time as I'm curious to see how these sound.

The funny thing about Sony is, they do make some good speakers here and there. If they just didn't have that name on them, people might think different about them, but not all (or even the majority) of their speakers are good.

I still have some flat digital Sony self-powered speakers I in -- don't laugh! -- 1986 or so. I bought them with a Sony D5 CD player (their first portable; it later stopped working and I discarded it, idiot that I was). They sounded great for many years, no bass to speak of but frankly very crystal clear. I've used them as center or center-augment speakers form time to time. Still have them in a box somewhere. I should plug them in to an iPod and see what I think today.

OTOH, years ago I was talking with a Bose engineer, who claimed that Sony amps had crap chipsets in them, and were prone to burn out when connected to high end speakers. I have no idea if this is still generally true, or if it extends to their speakers.

I had a set of Sony cans about 10-15 years ago that sounded very nice and had surprisingly good bass. I eventually replaced them with mid-range Grados which were better, but it wasn't like night & day. OTOH, I've never heard any Sony speakers that I liked.
