Hello,

We bought a Western Digital TV Live in 2012 and have mostly used it to stream movies from shared folders on our Windows machines to a "dumb" TV.

The device works okay most of the time except for 2 issues: (1) its wireless reception is subpar, and (2) the software can be buggy at times, leading to frequent resets to factory defaults. The first problem is more serious because our router is located at a position such that wired connection to the WD TV Live isn't practical.

I'm really hoping someone might advise us on a possible replacement (or an upgrade to a newer version). The key requirement is the capacity to stream movies from shared folders on Windows PC's.

Thank you very much!

p.s. We have the wireless router Asus RT-AC6U that broadcasts 802.11ac signals.

The letters you're looking for is DLNA. The real question is not what hardware for your tv plays it - as most everything will, but how much work do you want to spend organizing your colllection on the pc. Servers range from doing almost nothing but putting up the structure as you see it (like universal media server) to tying into all sorts of databases to make menus and supply information for your stream.

I use a lg bluray player for my big screen and various roku players with perl programs.

If you are "really" into it, check out Plex. It will organize your media and server to a bunch of clients. You could get almost anything to watch movies - from Roku to Amazon devices.

And I do mean "really" into it. Plex is not plug and play and the initial setup can be confusing. Once you get it going it is great.
