Not really "another" issue or anything new—it's the exact issue Epistuff posted on 1/3/2013 and Jason Charlton and schan1269 answered over the next several days. I know y'all have dealt with this one before; it's only new to me. Like everyone else, my problem begins with "Everything was fine until I bought a new TV..."

The new Sharp Aquos 50" replaces a Toshiba 40" HDTV. The problem is out-of-sync audio in every possible configuration with my Pioneer receiver. I've spent (literal) hours on the phone with Sharp customer service and with AT&T U-verse re-setting by STB. I've run HDMI and component cables from the STB to the TV and (analog) audio out from the TV to the receiver; component video cables from the STB to the TV and audio cables from the STB to the receiver then audio-out from the receiver to the TV; and component video cables from the STB to the TV and audio cables from the STB to the receiver (sending no audio signal to the TV at all). Audio through the receiver is ahead of the video, so the TV's audio lag adjustment does no good; the TV is already lagging behind the receiver. The receiver must be the culprit as the STB and TV are fine when I use only the TV's built-in speakers.

Reading posts in this forum and on another website, I've turned off or minimized all the picture quality settings (motion smoothing and others) that in effect "slow down" the video. Right now, on "Sports" setting it is almost in-sync; it is so v-e-r-y close. I can probably live with it for a few weeks (or switch to TV-only audio when it's more noticeable with talking heads) until I figure out which new receiver to buy.

My Pioneer receiver has led a long and happy life and served me well. I didn't realize until I found the owners manual that it's (gulp) 20 years old. I purchased the Pioneer VSX-403 in 1994! So (obviously) it doesn't have audio-lag settings or HDMI inputs or outputs. It's all RCA in (video and audio) and RCA out (video and audio)—and even has LD settings (anyone remember laser disc?) I was hopeful when I saw a "delay" setting on the remote control, but that was only a go-to-sleep setting.

So what do I have to have in a new AVR? (There really are questions in my ramble.) HMDI in and HDMI out? Will a new (digital?) receiver automatically have audio delay settings and capabilities if needed to sync with the TV? Will I configure everything as before (STB to TV via HDMI and audio out to the receiver)? Or will I run HDMI from the STB to the receiver and then HDMI from the receiver to the TV? (At some point I'll probably consider how the DVD player and CD player configure into all this but first things first.) And how much am I going to have to spend?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

The AVR is the center of everything. A new one will solve these issues...but you'll still have to turn off the image enhancements.

So I'm looking at AVRs and am pleased to find several choices under (or at) $200 with 4 HDMI in / 1 HDMI out. What I'm really surprised about is that it's impossible to find an AVR under $250 that has A/B speaker switching capability. That used to be pretty standard—and with all the much higher-tech and more sophisticated features offered "nowadays" it seems like it would've been easy (and cheap) to retain that nicety.

(My B-speakers are outside on my porch/patio so that's a must-have feature.)

The Pioneer VSX-522-K (I tried to be loyal to Pioneer) doesn't have A/B switching; neither do the Yamaha RX-375 or Denon AVR-E200. So now I'm looking at the Sony STR-DH740 (on sale for $229.00) which does.

How does that sound to you, Sam? Or anyone else? Anything else come to mind that I should consider?

Thanks again,
Tony
