Why is there no R1 version of Anthony Mann's The Heroes of The Telemark (1965)?
I watched a dreadful Nordic R2 version which made me long for
a better release. The version I watched was letterboxed, wobbled, had scratches and vertical lines etc...
Too bad, it's probably one of most realistic WWII movies made
in the sixties: mostly shot on the real locations, the Germans doesn't fall like flies when shot at, no tongue-in-cheek dialogue, etc.
But it is not a movie for someone who needs/wants
non-stop ridiculous or overblown action every minute...

Yes, I am aware of that version but I haven't heard any
reports of the picture quality.
With "decent transfer", do you mean it is just OK and
could be better?
Could you compare it some other DVD?

I saw this for the first time a couple of weeks ago on one of the pay channels. It was, sadly, pan & scan, but I still enjoyed it. Would love to see it on DVD in it's OAR. How I managed to go all these years without seeing this terrific film is beyond me.

Another solid Anthony Mann effort...pretty low-key overall
considering what might have been done with another director,
which is one of the films best elements. I thought the
lack of music during the last 1/3 was interesting and Kirk
should be given points for making up his 'Spartacus' ego
fest, control freak episode up to Mann. This should be on
DVD!!!

A Special Edition DVD was released by Carlton in 2003. The video is 16x9 Digitally Remastered with mono audio. When I ordered this through Amazon.UK I had now idea what the picture quality might be, but this transfer looks wonderful! I didn't notice any horrible scratches or bad color on this transfer? The black levels looked great! It would be great if it came out as a R1 release, but at the moment the Carlton Special Edition DVD works for me!

I was thinking that a few weeks ago when TCM listed Telemark in its printed guide as being letterboxed. Then I noticed on TCM's site as the airdate neared that it was going to be full-screen, and the DirecTV on-screen listings didn't have the "LB" indicator. TCM ended up running it full-screen and looks to be running another FS version March 23.

ohh... I got the Carlton edition too (UPC 037115-055132) and just
watched it yesterday and I think it deserves a better transfer/restoration...
It wobbles sideways and there something like a halo around objects,
much more than ordinary edge enhancement.
Sometimes there is a hint of a vertical line in the middle.
Not that much scratches though...
If anyone has a place to put pictures, I can make some screencaptures.

Although the UK R2 Carlton release says it has been remastered this is not to the standard of their Eagle has Landed restoration from around the same time which looks amazing.
The picture still shows its age although it does look better than TV broadcasts I have seen.

Hmm, the picture looks rather nice when viewed on small PC screen!
Much better compared to how I view it normally; on a 92" screen...
Anyway, made some caps which shows the halo which I talked about
and some caps which shows how good the picture looks sometimes
and especially some shots which shows off the widescreen composition.

Edit: the caps are rather small, but the ones with a 'b', like tele5b.jpg shows a
larger part to highlight the halos.

I hope the R1 version has the same good extras that the region 2 version has. Of course they should really be releasing this film on Blu-ray, because a good new transfer whould look fantastic in HD.

Great news about a pressed release!

I just tried to watch it the other night from the SONY HD Channel and was shocked to see that they letterboxed the opening credits in 2:35, only to reduce it to 1:85 once the credits had ended. !!! This is a practice I have noticed on HBO and SHOWTIME HD Channels and am very dismayed by it. I guess they are trying to eliminate any black bars whatsoever so that people can fill their entire widescreen TVs. Will this signal the end of complete letteroboxing and new filmmakers forgoing shooting in full scope?
