Horror/Gore DVD Shopping Help Please (1 Viewer)

Hi All,
Planing a little shopping trip tomorrow (Thursday) over to Orlando's Virgin Mega Store where I am meeting Chris White.
I was hoping to pick up a few virgins for sacrifice, but also thinking I might pick up some DVDs as well.
Seriously though I know Virgin tend not to be a cheap place to shop but the store in Orlando has one of the better selections of Horror DVDs I have seen. I was figuring to pick up a couple of handfuls of them while I was there.
Looking for Suggestions on DVDs (that have already been released) of Horror/Slasher/Gore movies that you would recommend. As some of you may have noticed from some of my recent postings I have grown bored with the latest sanitized Hollywood offerings and am fondly remembering the days of the Double Feature Horror Shows of my Teens in the Early 80's.
So if you think that you know a title or two or more that are actually out that are not tame please suggest them and I will print the list before I go tomorrow.

Well, you just waved a red flag at this bull. Here's a couple of my choices:
1. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 -- The first one is a great horror film but not particularly gory. The second one is incredibly gory with some pretty darn disturbing effects by Tom Savini. A fair amount of humor here, too.
2. Dead Alive (the unrated version) -- Not a scary horror film, it's an incredible black comedy that may well be the goriest movie ever made. The fake blood budget alone must have broken them. Directed by the remarkable Peter Jackson (who is also directing the upcoming Lord of the Rings trilogy), this is one terrific movie.
3. Day of the Dead -- Savini strikes again.
4. Evil Dead Trap -- A Japanese film with heavy hommage to Dario Argento. Gets REALLY weird by the end but opens with an eyeball scene that will make you cringe. Guaranteed.
5. And, finally, a movie that I HAVEN'T seen but is notorious for being tasteless and hard to handle from a gore standpoint -- Cannibal Holocaust. Directed by Italian hurl-meister Ruggero Deodato, this includes actual animal killings -- pretty sick in themselves, I understand -- and special makeup effects that test your endurance. Better bring a bucket.
I highly recommend the first three. I heartily recommend the fourth. And I pass on the info on the fifth based on hearsay and reviews.

Phantasm is an awesome movie, great dvd and has a low price.

I'm following this one with great interest. I'd also like to see odd foreign horror titles if anyone can think of any.
Max, you actually seem a bit of an expert on the subject. I appreciated your insight into Argento. What are your top titles?
*Edit -- I meant to say that I am intereseted in both American and foreign titles. (Like Max.)

I have the first 3 so I know you have good taste errr Um Bad Taste.
Do you know for sure the other 2 are out on DVD? I have heard about Cannibal Holocaust as well and will check to see if it is there.

I managed to get Phantasm on DVD before it was even released thanks to a Friend that new how much I wanted it.
So far I do seem to be getting some good ideas on how to lighten my wallet tomorrow.

The thread is not just limited to foreign Horror though I do enjoy it.
As for Argento, I like Deep Red, inferno Suspira, Demons, Phenomena, and Tenebre. Oddly enough he actually was one of the insperations for this trip. I plan to try and come away with Suspira, and Tenbre.
I have Stendhal's Syndrome though I found I don't really care to much for that one. I guess it just did not meet my hope of what a more modern movie by him would be like.

Max, all the ones I listed are out on R1 disc. Wizard of Gore and 2000 Maniacs are just two of Herschell Gordon Lewis' wonderfully gory (if dated) flicks. A lot of others are also on DVD (Blood Feast, Color Me Blood Red, Gore Gore Girls, Gruesome Twosome)
Re-animator has recently been re-released and should be widely available. The Dead Hate the Living should also be widely available.
The Dead Next Door is a bit hard to find (being a Canadian import) but well worth it.
The Johnsons is supposedly OOP, but I recently got it for $8.49 at Sam Goody.

I would 2nd 2000 Maniacs, redneck/gore/comedy fun for all.
Also I would pick up Blood Feast if you don't have it.
Also check out the Coffin Joe movies, due to budget I only have the first one At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul, but I've heard the other 2 are much wilder and they are also in color. Midnight has Ed Woodian production values, but is a pretty effective horror movie. Very atmospheric with a few gore scenes.

I've seen the Dead Hate the Living DVD in stores. I think you have to special order The Dead Next Door from the manufacturer.
I haven't seen it, but I've heard the Hong Kong film Biozombie is decent.
And, Re-Animator has been reissued and is widely available again.

Damn I going to have to hit the ATM and Set a Limit on my spending Lots of Good Stuff here. I dig Hershel Gordon Lewis movies. There is just something odd and cool about you know something weird.
The Last time I was at the Virgin Mega Store I actually ran out of Money (I won't use Credit Cards on DVDs only Hardware ) and did not come close to getting all I wanted.
There Horror Section was like no other Brick and Mortar store I have seen.

I'll second At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul. I too am waiting for the proper budgetary alignment to get the other Coffin Joe films
I'll also add the movie Pieces. It's cheap, got poor acting, and is a ripoff of countless others. However, it's also got a chainsaw and body parts. You really can't go wrong with any movie that's got a chainsaw in it.

I would have to tend to agree with that. It is why I want Motel Hell on DVD allready.

I have Cannibal Ferrox on DVD and think it is cool though a little lite on the gore.

I have a Bunch of Troma stuff but generally their gore is not very realistic. I consider most of their stuff comedy even if they Don't. Terror Firmer is one funny movie.

If you don't mind waiting for shipping, here is a DVD sale thread that is heavily steeped in the kind of films you're looking for. This should save you a ton of money compared to what Virgin will charge you as long as you can wait for a few days.

Yes, Cannibal Holocaust recently came out on DVD (http://www.mondo-digital.com/cannibalhol.html), as did Evil Dead Trap (http://www.mondo-digital.com/deadtrap.html). (I have an old bootleg VHS of Evil Dead Trap that I should replace.)
Of course, there's a whole bunch of Japanese material that is notorious but not available in any form other than bootleg tape. And unfortunately, I've never seen them. Stuff like the Guinea Pig series and the Atrocity series -- both of them pretty despicable, I'm told. The Japanese are WAAAAAYY over the top on their weirdest stuff.
My wife also reminded me of Organ, another Japanese movie out on DVD. This is kind of a "taster's choice" kind of thing. An avant garde kind of film with lots of glop and weird imagery. It's outre enough that I can't quite recommend it as a horror film; but if you're also a fan of bizarre flicks, it's worth checking out.
And -- also on the Japan front -- if you've never seen "Tetsuo: The Iron Man," it's one of the strangest and most incredible fantasy movies ever made. One of a kind and available on a nice DVD.
I second the nomination for Reanimator. Stewart Gordon's best film, I think. And if you get it, watch during the medical students class. There's a scene with the teacher and pupil staring at each other from each side of the screen with students looking on from the background. The short brunette/blonde woman in the center of the screen is a dear friend of mine. She was particularly proud of the fact that she wangled her position into the middle of that shot. (She was production manager on the film.)
I also find the Jose Mojica Marins (Coffin Joe) movies pretty bizarre, though the production values leave a lot to be desired.
There's also a boatload of grotesque Hong Kong flicks, very little of which is currently on DVD in this country. Things like "The Seeding of a Ghost" (more accurately translated as The Impregnation of a Ghost) really cross the line...
Finally, Joerg Buttgereicht's flicks are also seriously demented but, again, tasteless enough to merit specialist attention only. (I wouldn't show them to friends.) Nekromantik 1 & 2 are the best and Der Todesking is also of interest. I've never seen Schramm (which is on the for-trade list somebody mentioned above.)
Of recent horror flicks that "made the effort," one of the few that comes to mind is "From Dusk Till Dawn." Lots and lots o' fun!!
And, finally, (phew, talk about a long-winded message) I also omitted some things like "Doctor Butcher, M.D. (Medical Deviant)" because it's pretty cheesy and the effects aren't that good. (Plus, I guess it ISN'T on DVD.) But ya gotta LOVE that title!!!

Just as I was about to go into the other room to watch the tube, I was reminded of a wonderful Euro-trash horror flick:
Vampyres
It's out on DVD and is a terrific example of the European sex/horror movies of the '70s
And then that reminded me of the Jean Rollin films, which I am pretty uneducated about. Does anyone think a Rollin movie would fit on this list? If so, which one?

Not horror, but definitely gore:
The Toxic Avenger
Very campy, extremely goofy, and a whole lot of fun. It's of a different vein than the other films listed.
I saw it when I was about 12 or 13 and we had to keep rewinding the "head crushing" scene.
It's great to watch with friends who are into that kind of stuff, but it's like watching a Britney Spears video - you feel weirdly guilty if someone finds you watching it by yourself.

What about the Story of Ricky-Oh?? That one is classic!!
