O.K....The Tonight Show is not going to be an in depth one hour interview. But, could Leno be any more irritating, insulting, smarmy and superficial?
For sometime now I've just been time shifting the last 10 minutes of the show so I can catch any music I might like. Depp is an interesting cat so I taped all of the Friday night show, surprised he's even consent to an appearance. But, with Pirates of the Caribbean to hustle, there he was, gold teeth and all.
What's so discouraging about it all is, this must be what an American audience wants. Insult gays. the French, Keith Richards, Barbi dolls, Depp's clothing choices, and on and on.
I remember when Leno was funny, actually I remember his first time on Carson.

The only thing Jay Leno does well is his monologues, not material mind you, but delivery. :) He is an accomplished stand up comic but his interviews are absolutely the worst. It's a wonder he gets the highest ratings.

I disagree Scott, he's a terrible stand-up. He repeats punch lines over and over and they weren't funny the first time. He never seems to have any wit of his own when his stuff bombs, so he just turns to his equally half witted counterpart that plays guitar.

I mean seriously, he's still doing Monica and OJ jokes. I can't stand Leno.

I want Carson back! But I still think that it's funny that Depp walked off with studio props, err - the teeth.

I used to like Leno, years ago, but I lost all respect during the "Dancing Ito's" era.

I've never beena big Jay leno fan...he's too goody-goody and afraid to be even the slightest bit non-family friendly.

I am not much of a fan of Leno but can't stand Johnny Depp. He has stated in the past that he moved to France because the U.S is too violent. Yet most of his movies are very violent. He always bashes America but has no problems making money off of Americans when it's time for a movie to be released. Since the U.S is so terrible maybe he should just release his movies in France.

I've said it time and again; Lettermen may not receive the best ratings, etc. etc. whatever.. but when he gets a meaty interview, he doesn't pull punches, ask the right questions, and manages to catch people off guard. I've never seen Leno ask anything but puffballs and irrelevent, guest friendly pieces.

When Lettermen had Hillary Clinton on, whether you love her or hate her, he at least asked questions of general interest (like her political future) rather then the idiotic "where did you get that outfit" kind of babble you get from Jay..

We don't get the Tonight Show in NZ, but we do get Dave. I was in America on holiday late last year and did watch a couple of Leno shows out of curiosity, and was really unimpressed. This guy beats Dave? Damn Hugh Grant!

I mean seriously, he's still doing Monica and OJ jokes.
To be fair, Dave still does Monica/Clinton jokes. But only occasionally. And only when relevant to current events (like Mr Personality or Hilary's book). And when he does, he usually doesn't bother finishing the joke because everyone knows what the punchline will be anyway.

But it's been a while since an OJ joke.

The only time I like Leno is when he's doing stuff that his writers (probably) didn't have much of a hand in (IE Headlines, Jaywalking). Other than that it's usually just lame.

Dave can be beyond a little odd at times, but he's still usually fairly entertaining.

Leno seems to be getting worse every year. As mentioned previously, he has one of the stalest monologs ever. Please... no more jokes about Monica, OJ, or viagra! It's obvious most of the people in his jay-walking segments are acting dumb on purpose. Headlines are kind of funny, but he doesn't really have anything to do with that.

I can't believe there is even a question between Leno/Letterman... Conan O'Brian and John Stewart are by far the two funniest late night hosts.

The first order of business was a quip from Leno about Depp's supposed difficulties getting into the studio because from his appearance security had no clue he was a celeb/guest. After establishing that he lived in France Leno went off on a tangent about Depp living at the top of the Eiffel Tower. Then there was a discussion about Depp's character in the new movie being partially based on Keith Richard's 1970s look. Leno dragged out 3 Barbi dolls that had been turned into "Pirates Of The Caribbean" action figures.

Guys, I would love to have scene this interview - it reads pretty damn funny at least ;) Leno knows Depp tends to be a bit on the serious side, so he was probably extra goofy for the audience to enjoy. Many people don't like him, but I've never really found Dave that funny; to each his own!

I liked the interview a lot. As Mike said, Depp comes across as a serious person, and Leno was having some fun with him.
