I seriously have more of a life than worrying about the AFI, but I did read the AFI Home Theater Forum challenge that went on a few years ago (essentially, the HTF did a "revote" to see where the movies would still fall).

I've a question...at the end of that list, they did honorable mentions, movies that just didn't make the list. Does anyone know what movies ranked after the original 100 on the AFI list? For example, I'd be interested to know what finished #101-#200 or at least the next 10.

Anyone, anyone? Why Cool Hand Luke and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf didn't make the AFI list is beyond me!!!

Thanks!

Matt,

I have no insight on the ORIGINAL AFI list beyond the top 100.

However, I do have the rest of our rankings. To refresh the situation, we took the original 100 films, we voted for 25 to come off the list for a revote, we voted for 25 replacements to go into a revote, we picked 25 films from the 50 films up for revote, then we took that new set of 100 and reranked it.

So we have films that just missed being one of the 25 nominated and we have films that just missed being one of the 25 revoted onto the final 100.

In order, here are the 25 films that missed being nominated for the revote

1) Once Upon a Time in the West
2) Shawshank Redemption
3) Blade Runner
4) Arsenic and Old Lace
5) The Adventures of Robin Hood
6) Alien
7) Greed
8) The Day the Earth Stood Still
9) Die Hard
10) All the President's Men

11) The Last Picture Show
12) Sullivan's Travels
13) Blazing Saddles
14) Nashville
15) Rosemary's Baby
16) Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
17) White Heat
18) Beauty and the Beast (Disney of course)
19) The Magnificent Ambersons
20) Night of the Living Dead

21) The Great Escape
22) Out of the Past
23) The Music Man
24) Red River
25) Halloween

In total we had 171 different films mentioned in the "possible replacement films" revote, from which we took 25.

And here are the 25 films from the 50 revote that were then left off of the final 100

1) Amadeus
2) Toy Story
3) The Exorcist
4) The Right Stuff
5) Intolerance
6) Dr. Zhivago
7) Dances with Wolves
8) The Deer Hunter
9) From Here to Eternity
10) The Conversation

11) Midnight Cowboy
12) Rebel without a Cause
13) Guess Who's Coming to Dinner
14) Forbidden Planet
15) Easy Rider
16) Forrest Gump
17) A Place in the Sun
18) Mutiny on the Bounty
19) Tootsie
20) Wuthering Heights

21) Giant
22) Birth of a Nation
23) An American in Paris
24) Yankee Doodle Dandy
25) The Jazz Singer

For the 2 films you mentioned, you will find Cool Hand Luke was a film that was first nominated and then put on the new 100 in the revote. Virginia Woolf is in the next 25 from the nomination list as shown above.

Another tidbit, the next 5 films almost put into the revote from the original 100 were:

1) Sound of Music
2) Network
3) Duck Soup
4) Pulp Fiction
5) Fargo

That doesn't mean they wouldn't have made the final cut though because the 4 of the 5 films just above them - Rocky, West Side Story, E.T., and Bringing Up Baby - all made the revote cut back onto the final 100. The 5th film that was left off in that group was From Here to Eternity.

Fargo might be seen as the film most "saved" by not falling into the revote group as it came in at 92 on the final list, but then Rocky came in a 89 and did go into the revote only to make it back onto the final 100 rather comfortably (7 films below it on the revote 25 cut).
