If so...

Why haven't they released The Sword in the Stone, Robin Hood, 101 Dalmatians and others in their original format?!?

When 101 Dalmatians was reissued in theaters in 1991, it was shown in 1.33 with black space on the sides.

Per the imdb, these were animated at academy ratio, but were intended to be show wide.

I think the consensus is that all the Disney Classic animated films available on DVD are in their OAR regardless of the text on the package (i.e. some say "modified to fit your screen," but they're not). Many of the older films were animated in the Academy Ratio which is close to that of a standard TV.

The possible exception is the "The Fox and the Hound" which is suspected to be pan-and-scan.

SLEEPING BEAUTY and LADY AND THE TRAMP were the only Disney animated features to be widescreen up until the 1980's. I'm actually not too sure about FOX AND THE HOUND. It's possible that it was animated for 1.85:1. That film came at an odd time in Disney history when they almost went under. OLIVER AND CO. was the beginning of their return.

Thanks for all your comments! I had checked the IMDB, and it indeed said the movies are 1.33, yet the DVD & Laserdisc technical specs say they are pan & scan. That actually confused me.

Also, let's not forget the 1980's "restoration" of Snow White made the movie... argh... a "widescreen presentation", by chopping off portions of the film.

As far as all Disney movies being OAR, that's not true (at least for foreign DVDs). My "Monsters, Inc" R4 DVD is only presented on 1.33, and not the original widescreen version.
