With the upcoming Indiana Jones box set coming including a new surround mix, I was wondering: When did movies and theaters introduce surround sound?

What was the first surround movie? Is there any history of how this came about somewhere on the web?

Just curious (and not sure what forum this belongs in).

You can go back to "Fantasia" in 1940 although it didn't have much effect on the rest of the film industry. The "modern" surround sound came into its own with "This Is Cinerama" in 1952. 5 Speakers behind the deeply curved screen, two on the sides of the auditorium and one in the rear (used for panning effects mostly). By the end of the decade 6 channel magnetic sound was used for the big roadshow pictures. Well before Dolby.
