Used the ez set today. It works one out of three times. Seemed to set the right front too low and center too loud, so I did a manual adjust. Still have +10 on the surrounds and rears. But the CD music quality is very nice, clean, and full. It never gets loud, just fills the house with more sound as I crank it up. Very nice piece for 799. Still don't know what to do with my 3802, very nice reciver. May use it in another room. Quote from HK
"Hi Earl,
Thanks for your inquiry to us. If you are using loudspeakers that are not timbre matched, it is certainly possible that you would need to make a higher adjustments for either the front or rear channels due to the efficiency of the loudspeakers. Increasing the levels to 7 - 10 is also not unusual in some systems since room modes could also change levels of loudspeakers based on location. Unfortunately I am not familiar with the loudspeakers you are using in your system since they are not models numbers we have in our product line up.
To properly set up your room , I would first bring all settings back to 0db and then make your reference volume level set to -15dB. Then try the EZ set test mode again. Make sure you keep your mike/remote in the same position for all speaker channels.

Harman Kardon AVR7200 Surround Sound 7 x 100W 7.1-Channel A/V Receiver - Seven-Channel, High-Current, Ultrawide-Bandwidth Amplifier "Online Special Only"
I know that it may be a hassle, but you can tell if it is the receiver if you simply swap out the mains for rears. If you still have the 10 db difference, then it is room or receiver related.
My cerwin 15" woofer monsters are too large to drag around and I don't want to pull out my oak shelf which is very heavy at this time and do a wire switch. I have two AR speakers in the back room I may switch out with the JBL 28's. But at +10 for the rears, +8 for the surrounds I am happy enough.
Rats, sure would be nice to add DPLIIx to this beast. Why the heck is H/K offering upgrades for the 430 and 630 but not for the flagship 7200?
Logic 7 is actually a better version of a processing software than that of PLIIx. They are actually designed by the same person and I've used both, Logic 7 does a better job.
I would buy the 7200 anyday of the week over the 1400 due to the high current amplification of the HK's. Much better sound field and overall better amplification.
Listen up everyone- run to those sites and buy the HK 7200- I have one and spent twice as much as this some time ago - the amplification of this was vastly superior to similarly priced Onkyo, Sony , Yamaha, and yes Denon-at the time - at $799 its a steal ....WHO NEEDS 7 channels ? Logic 7 is really excellent as well (yes Meridians processing is superior - its surreal when it translates 2 channel; to multichannel experience, but so much more $$$)
spend the money on 5 excellent speakers, not two extraneous, confusing, unnecessary surrounds - to beat this you really must upgrade SIGNFICANTLY -separates; Anthems probably; not really sure Rotel upgrade makes a significant difference ...to establish my sanity with the skeptics, I would love to have lexicon sound processing -its awesome-but 5x the $$$ - maybe when I hit the lottery ! Also, the HK is large heavy and fairly hot (although you dont need a fan), and some dont like the cheap tuner knob. For thsoe concerned about reliability, Buy One calls extended warranty for a few more dollars - if electronics dont fail duirng an extended warrnaty period, you problem wont be long term failure,. reliability, but in 10 years youll be wanting the next newest thing in receivers by then !
If teh appearnce of the HK doesnt turn you off, and you dont want to spend $5K plus on separates, BUY THIS NOW BEFORE THEY RUN OUT and treat yourslef to some great speakers and /or subwoofer
For kicks, now that you have them balanced, swap the main wires for the rear wires at the back of the 7200. This will show how much difference the setup, impedance, seating position, and room nodes have on your balance. If it changes the balance, it may be the speakers or receiver, if it remains balanced, it is the room.
This should be relatively easy, unless you have to lift "The Beast".
Man, I want a 7200 so bad but we're spending lots of money in prep for the arrival of our first child in June.
I'm still using the Sony DB930 which was bench tested to deliver 93 watts with 5 channels driven (ref link below)...and my mains are Pinnacle Classic Towers which have a sensitivity of 95db. How much of a difference will I notice given the output of the Sony and the hig sensitivity of my mains?
The difference won't be noticeable in how loud it can go, since you have such sensitive speakers. I do believe that you would notice a difference in the fullness of the sound at all volumes. I noticed a markedly more full and open sound upgrading from another 100wpc receiver.
Never ending power means that you won't feel pinched sounds at higher volumes.
I would call the HK sound to be much like a "velvet sledgehammer" Very easy on the ears at moderate volumes with enough power to pound you into submission.
I too have the 7200 and I have absolutely zero buyers remorse with this unit. I have kicked around the idea of doing a separate 5 channel amp but it seems pretty rediculous given the size of my HT (11x16x10). I was pretty easy on everything for a while but I demo'd the Lion King at -15 dbs this weekend for a friend and his jaw hit the ground.....even with the CHT-10 sub (just wait until I upgrade to a real sub...hehe). That's the loudest I've played it and it was pretty awsome to say the least. The velvety smooth sounds coming from the HK is an awsome combination with the Swans.......
I'm considering a couple of those wall hanging Magnapans for rears of a 7.1 because of room restraints but other than that....5.1 is great and me be very happy!!
I know that it may be a hassle, but you can tell if it is the receiver if you simply swap out the mains for rears. If you still have the 10 db difference, then it is room or receiver related.
Does the 1400 sound "bright" with Paradigm speakers? I have Monitor 3's up front with an infinity center and infinity rears. Someday they will all be paradigm. But i need a new received because my SR7000 is dead right now."
I have a full set of Paradigm Monitors and just picked up the AVR7200 at Fry's $749. My back's a little sore now but I'll give my opinion.
I have two surrounds systems and needed a second high caliber amp. I compared it with the same speakers setup (HSU-VT2 sub)with my Marantz SR8000.
The Marantz is warm and bassy, the 7200 is bright and bassy. The main thing I noticed is clarity of all the surround speakers, mainly the center channel. Voices are much more destinct and subtle surounds effects are popping out that I didn't hear before. The amps not near broken it yet so things should get even better. So it's bright but not harsh on the ears. Steely Dan's latest CD sounded very good, I'd rate the receiver excellent for HT & Music.
This Fry's just had a Grand opening in Concord/Bay Area. On Sunday the AVR7200 was $799.00, I wanted to see if they would deal down to $599, no way they say - I don't think Fry's deals like other retailers. Anyway I went back on Monday and the sticker price was lowered to $749.00 so I thought I'd give it a try.
Testing in the store with their Polk Audio Speakers wasn't as impressive as when I got it home.
In the store I thought the Onkyo 701 sounded fuller, it had a strong bass sound in all the speakers. A/B-ing the 7200 and the 701 showed the 72000 being much cleaner or brighter.
At home after calibrating and setting the crossover to 80HZ with all speakers set to small gives and excellent sound for HT&Music. I'd describe it as a snappy elastic type effect giving a sort of bouncy sound field. Very nice
I'd get help lugging this thing around. I wrenched my back boosting it up above my RPTV. ouch!
I've went to the same Fry's as Tom. I'm not quite sure how they have those speakers set up. One salesman showed me the Eagles Hell Freezes Over on the 7200 and it wasn't even running DTS. I think the DVD was set to 2 channel stereo. The effects were off but he had 5 Polks going at the same time. I think they just wire all the receivers to a switchboard and do speakers selects from there.
I tried to get my buddy to return his HK 520 to Costco and put the money towards the 7200 which is now $749. He considered it but then realized how huge the 7200 is and it wouldn't fit on his shelf.
I think it's best if you can to keep this and any other receiver out of closed cabinets.
Now at home I can compare two great receivers with proper setup, the Marantz SR8000 and the HK7200. Guess what I like the HK7200 alot better. It's that elastic snap you get, plus it has much more clean power over the Marantz. Hey "Elastic Snap" think I've coined a new phrase.
My Fry's raised it to $800 : ( As soon as i can find it for $800 out the door from an autorised dealer I'm buying. I hope J&R has it on their Friday sale for $800 delivered this week. They have before when I was on the fence.
heheheeh..............you said "elastic snap"...ahhh...hehehehe...that was cool. I don't know what the hell you mean by that but I will say this...the7200 continues to amaze me. I was WAY to easy on this system when I got it but now, I've had a chance to "let it rip" and all I can say is wow......for the money....there is NO comparison. Sure, it might be nice to have DPLIIx but that's about it. L7 will emulate that (and some say they like it better than DPLIIx) but seriously, those of us who jumped on this reciever only regret the day it quits working.
