I was looking at the some new sub cables and noticed a variance in the conductor size.
best deal cables conductor is only 23awg.
Element cable is 18awg
Cobalt cable is 22awg
Better cable does not list
Monster does not list
Blue Jeans Cable 18awg
Belden 1694A cable widely used 18awg.

How important is the thickness of the conductor?

The thickness of the conductor is less important than the shielding around the conductor. The low level signal is never in jeopardy of over powering a 22-24 gauge wire. 1-2 volts is all that line levels usually carry.

Keeping noise out of that signal is the important element.

Speaker level connection will yield better sound over RCA connection if that is doable in your system and your system is for 2 channel stereo listening only. If it is for HT, then RCA would be better to hear your LFE effects!!

MOST of the exotic cable manufacturers use Belden 1694A coax. The thickness of the center conductor has no bearing on the sound quality of your sub in low level signals. Nearly any RCA cable that is of good quality will do.
