With Grindhouse now in theaters (I loved it by the way) I thought I'd see what some of the HTF members favorite grindhouse movies are and maybe this can be an ongoing thread because I love these types of movies. I'll start off with a few of mine.

Dolemite- Rudy Ray Moore stars as Dolemite who gets out of prison to help find out who supplied the guns that got his cousin Jimmy killed and who was suppling the drugs that are bringing down the town (though about two thirds of the way though we forget all about that plot point). The production values are so low in this flick that it sometimes seems like the cast and crew had no idea how to make a movie- from bad acting, obviously reading lines from a cue card off camera to boom mics in the shot.

But what makes Dolemite a great movie is Rudy Ray Moore. The guy just has a certain screen presence about him that makes him fun to watch. Just listen to his monologues at The Total Experience and on the streets with the group of guys who bet each other that he is in fact THE Dolemite. With such characters as Dolemite's all girl kung-fu hit squad (who were in real life were trained by the Chuck Norris School of Karate) to the heroin junkie known as “The Hamburger Pimp” to Willie Green “the baddest mother-fucker you ever seen” you get your fill of standard stereotypes, including (and it wouldn't be blacksploitation without it) the evil white men. You'll be quoting the one liners in this flick for weeks. I'll wrap up the essence of Dolemite with a quote from the man himself: “...and we will let them know that Dolemite is my name, and fuckin' up mother-fuckers is my game.”

Also see The Human Tornado (aka Dolemite II)

Thriller: A Cruel Picture- aka :They Call Her One Eye- aka: Hookers Revenge (and I'm sure a lot of other alternative titles)

There are exploitation movies and then there is Thriller: A Cruel Picture (it's American title). When I tell you this flick is hardcore you better believe it. Thriller is a Swedish film that recently got some press because of Quentin Tarantino saying that it was one of his favorite exploitation movies (word is he showed it to a lot of the Kill Bill cast members). Christina Lindberg stars as a young woman who, at a young age, was molested by an old man which lead to her becoming a mute. Working as a milk maid (if I remember that correctly) she had never really taken a vacation and was told to do so by her employer. All ready to go off to who knows where she accidentally just misses the bus (of course she can't yell 'stop' at the bus). No sooner has the bus left then a man pulls up beside our girl and asks her if she would like to go on a date. She gets into the car with him and they go out for a night on the town. He wines and dines her and brings her back to his house. Little does she know that he plans on dosing her with heroin. She passes out and that is when this flick goes ape shit.

This guy gets her strung out on heroin and forces her into prostitution. The only way she can get the fix she needs is to have sex with her new pimps' clients. As you might guess she doesn't take being forced into prostitution so well. With her first John she scratches his face and pisses him off quite a bit. Of course he tells her pimp who then says that he'll fix it so she never has that problem again. The pimp bursts into the room and with a scalpel and (hold on to your hats folks) gouges her eye out. Now I know what you're thinking. “Big deal I've seen them do things in movies like that before.” Not like this you haven't. You actually see the eye get the scalpel taken to it and juice comes out (it looks so real because it was actually a dead body that got the scalpel to the eye). The whole time I'm thinking no way they'll show that and then “HOLY SHIT!” This flick is hardcore. She then wears an eye patch though the rest of the film and is forced to comply to her pimps wishes.

Now I've said several times that this film is hardcore and I now I'm gonna tell you about the most hardcore part of this movie. The sex. Yeah, this isn't movie sex. There is full on penetration and some shit I won't tell you about that will make you go “I didn't just see that did I?” This is basically a porno with the most elaborate story you've ever seen. But don't think that sex is all that occupies this movie.

Our girl meets another of the pimps girls who is also stung out and is looking for a way out. One night she's killed and our girl decides for herself that she's going to get out no matter what it takes. With the extra money she makes on the side she devises a way to get out and ultimately take revenge on those who wronged her.

Again this movie is not for the faint of heart. It will take a lot for most people to get though this flick so view at your own risk. The production values are low and the end kind of takes forever with the style they chose (seems to me they just tried too hard to make it look cool). This flick is a must if you think you can handle it.

Well, that's it for now, I'd love to see what everyone else's favorite grindhouse and exploitation flicks are.

I just saw H.G. Lewis' Blood Feast, which was of course one of the first gore films. It's pretty poorly made, and badly acted, but has a pretty decent story and the gore effects look pretty good considering they're over 40 years old. Very interesting film that I'm glad I took the time to see. I've also gotten William Lustig's Maniac and Abel Ferrara's Ms. 45 that I will be checking out soon. And I picked up Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry after the Death Proof shout-out. It looks pretty cool. Peter Fonda in an early '70s car-chase movie. Sounds like fun to me.

There are a good many websites out there that have a decent selection of movies. Ones I like are http://www.hkflix.com/home.asp if you're looking for any old Shaw Bros. (or any martial arts for that matter) and suprisingly DVD Empire has a Grindhouse section: http://www.dvdempire.com/Exec/v2_cat...d=2&cat_id=682

And for a lot of the "mainstream" grindhouse flicks, you'll be happy to know that Amazon most likely has what you're looking for.

Also, you may want to check eBay because sometimes it's quite hard to find a particular title or it's out of print or maybe it was a TV movie that has just never got distribution on video, so be sure to check them out as well.

And for a cheaper way to seek out these movies (and not having to worry about buying something that totally sucks ass) Netflix and Blockbuster Online have a lot of the better known grindhouse flicks.

My favorite double feature I ever saw was actually Halloween followed by The Fog. I love both movies and it was a great experience to see them together.A guess for that would have been in 82. I dont remember the theater in NYC but it was close to Action Comics which was I think on 81st St.

But dad and I werent too big on the horror ones. We saw them occassionally, but we spent more time on martial arts and action. It was pretty great to see Dirty Harry/Magnum Force, Death Wish/The Bodyguard,Enter The Dragon/Chinese Connection, The Street Fighter/Return of the Street Fighter,36th Chamber of Shaolin/5 Deadly Venoms and such.

Drive Ins:One of my earliest double feature drive in memories are for 2 movies I cant remember the names of - the first was about Killer Bees, the second might have been Alligator.

Favorite drive in moment was easily seeing a naked Mathilda May in Lifeforce projected on a huge drive in screen. That moment is forever locked in my brain. That played with Trick Or Treat

My parents had moved upstate from the city and one of my dads favorite things about the area was drive ins.
