I took the video feed from the laserdisc and the audio from the Kostal CD and made my own "Fantasia/1982" on VHS in 1992. My own 10th Anniversary SE. Problem is, the CD runs a wee bit faster than the LD, and so about every minute or so, I'd have to make an edit, synch up and start again. Took me nine freakin' hours. The Pastorale was a nightmare, because the 1982 version of the film lopped off the shots instead of "frame-zooming" them. Took some creative editing to make anything out of that. I think Kostal's best contribution was the overall sturm und drang heard in the 1982 version. It doesn't have the precision and daring of Stokowski, but it tries to make up for it in visceral impact -- the Kostal version of A Night on Bald Mountain is a good example. Still, I miss the crazy stereo effects.

Anyhoo, back to the thread topic, Fantasia/1982 is indeed a highly-prized "lost film" I'd love to have on DVD.

Not really. THX might have meant something in terms of quality control in its first few years, but since then, there have been numerous complaints that "THX-endorsed" lasers and DVD's were, at best, no better than any other decent transfer and, at worse, inferior to them. And the term "hack" to describe Lucas may be harsh, but one has to wish he had produced the latest two films and left the writing and directing to those more talented in those fields. Episodes 1 & 2 are riddled with terrible acting and some of the most dumbed-down - even infantile - dialog this side of FIRE MAIDENS FROM OUTER SPACE.

As for STAR WARS being the holy grail, I feel kind of bad for people whose desires for classic catalog titles end with the Lucas trilogy. But I guess its all in what you grew up watching.

I won't be satisfied until I can own the original trilogy, and not this CG enhanced dung that ties into the worst prequel films in history.

If my movie spectrum was teeny tiny, then I'm sure Star Wars would do it for me. But since I love all types of films snd I love seeing new ones I doubt there will ever be a time when I'm NOT looking forward to something. I mean, some of Rene Clair's best films aren't out, same with Truffaut, Godard, Fellini, Lubitsch... (how anyone can be sated without Ninotchka on a spiffy DVD in their collection is beyond me) and a ton of other director's I love. Then of course there's all the MST3K episodes that need to come out (and I wish they'd focus on the pre-SciFi channel years, but that's another topic)

So i'm sorry your fun is ending, but mine will keep on a LONG time :D

Everyone has their different tastes in DVDs, therefore different appetites. Everyone's hunger for that "one DVD release above all others" will proabably never be fully quenched. Even if we get something that we've been searching/wanting for years, something else will inevitably take it's place.

As of right now, The Wizard sits on top of my list of "most wanted" DVD.

I'm glad people are excited about the Star Wars trilogy, but I've been begging for King of the Hill ever since I joined this forum (and I still don't have it). :frowning:

The fun's nowhere near over for most of us.

CG enhanced dung? The changes account for about 5-10% of the damn movies(if that) so I think you're getting a little carried away in your assessment. As for the Episode I and II being "the worst prequel films in history", I guess you missed When Harry Met Lloyd: Dumb and Dumberer.

Dick: I think you misunderstood the emphasis of the question posed to you. The focus wasn't on the "THX" part of it, it was on the "Classic Trilogy" part of it. But you address that later in the post, so you caught it on the backswing anyway ;)

There's a LOT of stuff I'm still looking forward to getting. Star Wars is nice to finally have, though, especially considering how well done the transfer is. Whoooo.

The Wizard, huh? I'm not knocking you, but I just want to make sure that you're referencing the Full Length Fred Savage Nintendo Commercial. Because that's a flick I'd never thought I'd see on the top of anyone's "most wanted" list, but I completely understand the hold nostalgia has. It's why I ended up buying "Transformers: The Movie" when it was first released.

I'm a huge Star Wars fan, and I'll admit that I get a little giddy when I think about how soon I'll be owning it on DVD, but it's far from my ultimate goal, as far as my DVD collection goes. Like many others, I won't be truly happy, Star Wars-wise, until the original, un-"improved" films are available on DVD. As for other movies, I may actually get more excited to hear about impending releases of Bringing Up Baby, the rest of the Thin Man movies, We're No Angels, and the entire holdings of the Harold Lloyd trust than I am over the upcoming Star Wars DVD's.

Count me in for "The Wizard," too! I was the exact target audience for this movie right when it was first released. I was eight years old and a total Nintendo freak. I saw it opening weekend and was very excited about the sneak peek at Super Mario Bros. 3.

I realize that it's not a shining example of brilliant cinema, but "The Wizard" was an important part of my childhood; I cued up my laserdisc of it just last week and boy does it bring back memories. I would pay dearly for a nice OAR DVD; it's definitely one of my top-three most wanted titles.

I watched Star Wars *a lot* during high school and college and never tired of it, but I can honestly say I have no desire at all to get this dvd set. I'm not obsessive over it, but the special editions simply aren't what I want and I wouldn't buy them anymore than I would the 30th Anniversary Night of the Living Dead. I can't even boast of having the original cuts on laserdisc or VHS, so until the original Star Wars comes out, I'm going to be totally free of it :)

There are still tons of movies that I want on dvd, either things that haven't come out yet, or movies that came out too early and need to be redone, or movies that were done well but I simply haven't bought them yet because there's so much stuff available and I can't afford everything at once. So there's still much fun for me to have with dvds :)

Me too! I'm with the Han Shoots First crowd: No Orig Trilogy = NO SALE!! I don't think the '97 tweaks were a crime but not releasing the original films is one! I have the originals on VHS but after watching DVD for the past 4 yrs it's pretty tough to switch back to the ol' VCR. But I will if it means staying w/my my film purist beliefs.

Star Wars is a huge release that I've been looking forward to. I'm really happy to be getting it and I'm also really pleased with the changes and improvements.

That said, I'm getting to the very end of the catalouge movies I want on DVD.

I'm hoping for a 13th Warrior / Eaters of the Dead Directors Cut.

A Lynch approved Dune SE

A Ripley Scott approved Blade Runner SE. The directors cut out there simply isn't a directors cut at all.

The Game SE
Titanic SE
1492 SE
Black Rain SE
Top Gun SE
The Last Boy Scout SE
Outland SE

Among Others

Strangely enough, as big a SW freak as I am, I own copies of the original uncut Droids TV series and I'm a bit ho-hum on this release already after anticipating it for so long.

But 2004 has given me a few things already, and some still to come, that I'm probably more excited about than the SW-OT...

Both the Weezer and Pixies compilations
Hitchcock Collection Box Set
(FINALLY) Iron Giant SE and Shawshank Redemption SE
Looney Tunes Golden Collection #2 (and #3, #4, ....)

Looking back, yeah, I agree that it's going to be somewhat anticlimatic, but there's so much other great stuff coming, I'm not worried at all about less enthusiasm...

I'm also quite sick of Star Wars despite the fact that they are still sort of my favorite movies. But collecting DVDs since May '98 and being a member here since early 1999 I whitnessed all the rumors, false release dates and discussing - frankly, after so much time now I no longer care about it. Here we are one month away and I'd rather have my Heat 2 disc SE than Star Wars. :frowning:
