Latest watches: 55. The Wicker Man. (1973) It doesn't seem to matter the amount of times I've seen this film, the ending is always horrific and hard to shake from my mind. I'm not even religious, but this film gets to me deeply. The first 2 Acts are mysterious, funny, erotic with a slight bit of unease..and the ending comes on like a joke punchline, but it's not funny. I wish I'd made this my last watch of the day. Felt good to see it again... 56. House. (1977) (First time viewing) Silly group of Japanese school girl 20-somethings (haha!) travels to an aunt's funhouse to act silly some more with their evil cat (I know, "evil cat" is a redundant statement). Pretty ridiculous. This is usually my thing, but I wasn't in the mood after the previous film. Bad choice. -------------------------------- Movies watched: (BOLD new) 1. Sixth Sense. 2. The Nanny. Bette Davis. (1965) 3. Malevolence. (2004) 4. Gamera: Guardian of the Universe. (1995) 5. Halloween: Curse of Michael Myers (6th film). 6. John Carpenters Vampires. 7. Invasion. (first viewing) 8. "I think this is one of the best horror movies ever made. Even 38 years later it still hasn't lost its power to terrify. Though we've become desensitized with alot of what is available nowadays back when I saw this in the early 70's it was pretty shocking material. Though I think reports of people throwing up and fainting were exaggerated there were a few people that left at the performance I attended." Pat, I agree. And the book by Blatty is still the most frightening book I've ever read. I read it when I was alone in a house at fifteen years old, and I can't really describe how horrifying the book was to me at that time.

27. Four Flies on Grey Velvet (1971) (first-time viewing) Minor entry from the vast Argento canon, but not bad at all, full of his trademark flourishes--a killer in the shadows, eyeball violence, sexual tension. A rock star accidentally kills a man, only to realize his actions have been caught on film by a mysterious masked person who blackmails him not for the money, but just for the fun of it. The plot drags a bit at times, but there were enough highlights to keep me interested for the running time of 103 minutes. The best sequence was when a woman tries to blackmail the blackmailer, and arranges and ill-fated meeting in a walled-in park that quickly empties of its occupants. Fans of creepy thrillers from the era should check this out at least once. Bob's A-Z 2011 Horror Movie Marathon List FTV means First-time Viewing 1. Antichrist (FTV) 2. Burning Bright (FTV) 3. The Crimson Cult (aka The Curse of the Crimson Altar) (FTV) 4. Dead of Night (FTV) 5. Evil Dead 2 6. Frontier(s) (FTV) 7. The Ghoul (FTV) 8. Hidden (2009) (FTV) 9. I Can See You 10. My mother read the book and she will not see the movie. I loaned her my DVD and she just returned it. I know she didn't watch it.

^^^ Yeah, it's not the greatest work from a literary standpoint (which wasn't my point, as you can hopefully glean from what I wrote above). But it is easily the most frightening work I've ever read. Only a couple of works of Poe that I have read rival it as far as generating genuine fear is concerned.

I think he was talking about the Landis book. :) Sometimes I think that if I were Catholic, the original The Omen would've induced a heart attack.

092) 10/27/2011 Son of Frankenstein (1939)
images

images
1/2

Basil Rathbone takes off where his father left off when he discovers the monster still lives! Karloff is the monster; Lugosi has his best role as Ygor; and Lionel Atwill crackles as the Inspector. The climax is dynamite.

093) 10/27/2011 The Hound of the Baskervilles (1939)
images

Is a ghostly hound responsible for the death of Sir Charles Baskerville? Does the same fate await heir Sir Henry? Terrific first outing for Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce as Holmes and Watson. Lionel Atwill and John Carradine are suspects. Atmospheric and chilling in spots.

094) 10/27/2011 The Face at the Window (1939)
images
images
1/2

Who is the "Wolf", a killer responsible for sundry stabbings? And what is his connection to the horrific face at the window that figures into the crimes? British ham Tod Slaughter's enthusiastic performance makes this fun. And the finale involves bringing a victim back to life to identify his killer!

095) 10/27/2011 The Gorilla (1939)

Bela Lugosi and Lionel Atwill are among the suspects in this old dark house comedy thriller with the Ritz Brothers covering the comedy. The horror stars do their best but this is pretty standard stuff with few laughs.

Little Shop of Horrors (1986) - Grade: A- A sleepy little flower shop on Skid Row sees business increase dramatically when a strange and interesting plant arrives and becomes, along with clerk Seymour, a celebrity. However, the plant soon reveals itself to be a carnivorous mean green mother from outer space with a taste for human flesh and a plan for world domination. An adaptation of the Broadway musical, which was adapted from the 1960 Roger Corman no-budget film, stars Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene, and Vincent Gardenia, with special appearances from Steve Martin, Bill Murray, John Candy, Christopher Guest, and Jim Belushi. A funny film with great songs, great performances, some creepy moments (the dentist...shudder!) and amazing animatronic effects. Hard to believe Audrey II was accomplished without the assistance of any CGI. The plant seems very much alive and, when combined with the voice of Levi Stubbs, projects a real attitude and personality.

I got in a couple more Video Nasties last night. I'm hoping to make a decent run this weekend on these.

047 (10-27) Evilspeak (1981) 3.5/5
The story of a nerd who uses his computer to summon Satan so he can get back at all the pricks in his military school shouldn’t be this good. It stars Clint Howard in what I’m sure is his only staring role, and he is really amazing in this. The subtle changes he goes through as the film progresses really makes this a treat. And to totally ruin the film, he pretty much gets away with it. I want a sequel!

048 (10-27) Expose/The House On Straw Hill (1976) 2.5/5
Udo Kier is in this one. It’s not a terrible film about a plagiarist writer getting his due, but it’s a tad dull and doesn’t really have a point.

Latest watches: 57. Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan. (1989) I know this one is not well liked. I understand why. But there is plenty I like about it, from the cute girl/dog to the boat trip that kind of starts on Crystal Lake and heads towards The Big Apple to the boxer dude and Jason seeing that billboard in NY. I usually watch this straight, but this time I was craving some MST3K episodes and made my own with this. A little too easy, I know. But fun. I do genuinely like this film though. 58. Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. (1988) I'm a Elvira fan. Non fans will prob not like this film. For me, it's hilarious. Elvira is like Joan Jett meets Dolly Parton meets Don Rickles/Andrew Dice Clay meets Bette Midler...this could go on...so I'll stop. I think she is quite a character. Much of the best bits are subtle, like Elvira's breasts pressed against the windshield...well, bad example. Perhaps when she is bouncing on the bed and there's a shot of that hilarious dog looking on. Or the smaller stack of "witch burning" wood... great stuff. And larger bits are also memorable, like her dinner w/ the town's hunk or the outdoor picnic that turns into an orgy. A real hoot! Note: Both these films feature The Statue of Liberty. That wasn't planned AT ALL, scout's honor. Funny, since today is the anniversary of the unveiling of the babe with the torch. Cool! -------------------------------- Movies watched: (BOLD below are new for me) 1. Sixth Sense. 2. The Nanny. Bette Davis. (1965) 3. Malevolence. (2004) 4. Gamera: Guardian of the Universe. Hocus Pocus - Grade: B+ The Sanderson sisters (Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, Sarah Jessica Parker), witches terrorizing Salem circa 1693, are finally caught and put to death. However, they vow to return in the future to have their revenge when a virgin lights the black flame candle. Fast forward 300 years and Max Dennison (Omri Katz) and his family have recently moved to Salem from L.A. Trying to impress a girl on Halloween night, Max breaks into the Sanderson house, now a museum, and foolishly lights the candle. The sisters return to renew their pursuit of Salem's children. However, if they cannot recreate their magic potion and steal a child's life essence before sunrise, they'll once again become dust. Not a particularly scary film, unless you count Bette Midler's huge buck teeth, but a fun Halloween movie.

I grew up in a strict Catholic household. My mother saw that book in my bag but she didn't know anything about it and I managed to convince her it was about a priest and a exorcism he performed on a young girl. Of course I was telling the truth in part but little did she know. :D I went to see the movie with my boyfriend. I had the benefit of having read the book but he didn't and he was freaked right out of his mind and so were quite a few people in the audience. As far as the book goes, yeah I agree that it was one of the scarest books I ever read.

How Awful About Alan (1070):star::star::star: A young man after spending 8 months in mental hospital following a tragic fire returns home to his sister. Afflicted with hysterical blindness, he is plagued my memories from his past and a mysterious boarder that is trying to kill him. Good cast which includes Anthony Perkins and Julie Harris elevates this material to something watchable. Panic (1982) :star::half: Part of the 50 nightmare classic collection the one is about a scientist who exposes himself to a deadly form of batheria which transforms him into a flesh-eating monster. The race is on to find a cure or the government will step in and eradicate the problem. Laughable bad and dull with poor acting. Make-up for this low budget B film not half bad.
