When I think of art in cinema, I think of either an artistic style of cinematography, or some kind of artistry in the narrative style or something of that ilk. Something that really showcases the TECHNIQUES of filmmaking.

Artistic comedies: Brazil, Royal Tenenbaums. For something lighter, I'd say Amelie. Certain sections of Fantasia. Most comedies work best with traditional techniques. Something being ARTISTIC doesn't mean it's BETTER.

You have yet to say why you think The Apartment is artistic.

Well I have, but not using your definition, which I disagree with.

However, if you want to talk technique, notice the scene early on when Jack Lemmon is forced to spend the night on a park bench, and how the bench seems to stretch out towards infinity. I'd say that was a very artistic shot showing his loneliness and plight very artistically.

I tend to focus much more on the screenplay, and this is a top notch story, very well laid out and written. I'd say that was artistic.

Billy Wilder is also a master of mixing drama and comedy (something he did very well earlier, such as in Stalag 17), yet brings to an even higher level here. I'd say that perfect mixture is very artistic.

But then again, we don't agree on what it means to be artistic, so I don't see much point in dwelling on it.

Comedy art that isn't dark?

Sherlock Jr., Steamboat Bill Jr., The General, Safety Last, The Gold Rush, Modern Times, Sullivan's Travels, The Lady Eve, The White Sheik, M. Hulot's Holiday, Mon Oncle, Stolen Kisses, Amarcord, The Aviator's Wife, Boyfriends & Girlfriends, Raising Arizona, The Hudsucker Proxy just to name a few. I'm sure others could come up with additional examples.

Can't say I agree with rather watch or best film, though best film is at least in the ball park.

Art IMHO is basically anything made by an artist that makes the audience confront certain issues and themes. Anything that elicits discussion is pretty much art in my book whether its film or a slam dunk in basketball.

What I determine is better art IMHO is how well the artist uses the tools set before him/her in creating their art, and how well their art presents their themes/values/issues.
