Great to see another double-dip announced before the first version is released.

I liked the movie, but not enough to buy it twice - so I have no problem with waiting for the 'Special Edition'.

I do enjoy how it appears that George Carlin is rolling his eyes in disbelief at the "Terrific" quote. I made that same expression.

But she still manages to drag the movie down.

Kevin Smith should do a 'George Lucas' and reshoot her scenes with a real actress - it would really improve the movie.

I'd actually disagree with that. I thought she did well for her small screen time, and this is from someone who is pretty much sick of her.

I have a friend of mine who thinks there was more chemistry there than his relationship with Liv Tyler. I can see where he's coming from, since most of the development with Liv is offscreen, as opposed with JLo (and at that point, the focus is on the relationship with his daughter anyways), but I don't agree with him.

I'd grab this as well. I thought it was really good. J-Lo doesn't really effect it at all, and Carlin was fantastic, Affleck was also really good.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie as well. I borrowed it from a friend shortly after its release. In all honesty, I completely forgot that Jennifer Lopez was in it until I read this thread. lol. How bad is that? IMO, she didn't 'ruin' the movie. She wasn't in it long enough to be able to. All I know is I thoroughly enjoyed this from beginning to end. I haven't bought the existing release yet, but since an extended edition is in the works, I'll gladly wait a while longer.

In January '03 I saw a screening of a longer cut of Jersey Girl with Smith, David Duchovny, and others. (There's a long story behind how that came to be.) That cut was better than the version released theatrically and on the current DVD. It was a stronger film. The scenes depicting how Ollie and his wife meet, then their courtship and marriage, were fuller and fleshed out. Lopez received more screen time (and, yes, she was perfectly fine), and their relationship didn't feel rushed and glossed-over. Her death was therefore a bigger event and a more impactful moment in a film that, frankly, couldn't afford to lose its impactful moments. Also more affecting was the intensity from Affleck in the gut-punch of Ollie's shock and grief.

Other bits that should have remained include the very last scene and its lovely return of Lopez over Tom Waits' song "Jersey Girl" (now covered by Bruce Springsteen during the closing credits). When I finally saw the theatrical version, the last scene's tepid recut was the biggest WTF? moment for me.

Sure, that version of the film didn't so much tug the heartstrings as hook them to the trailer hitch of a Humvee, but because it didn't pull its emotional punches it worked more boldly. It felt more honest, less directed by Marketing. At least for us married men in the audience, there was hardly a dry Ray-Ban'd or Botoxed eye in the house, and I, a sentimental softie, ended the film smiling and misty-eyed. Smith's mom told me that when they saw Harvey Weinstein wiping his eyes, they knew that Jersey Girl was the film they'd been shooting for. Afterward, I talked with Smith for a while, and he acknowledged that although its unflinching sentimentality was going make him a target for some critics, he'd achieved the film he wanted.

However, as Smith reports on the current DVD's commentary tracks, that original, longer version of Jersey Girl was focus-grouped to death, so what oomph it once had was smoothed away under the Black & Decker power sander of creativity-by-consensus before its theatrical release.

So a lot was whittled down in the current DVD version, and to the film's loss.

Now, I don't know if the cut that I saw will be the same one released on an upcoming DVD edition (if that happens). I hope so, if only to restore the original ending. In any case, if the chance comes I'll trade up my current DVD for the redo. Jersey Girl isn't up there with Dogma and Chasing Amy in my book, because it doesn't follow up on the push-the-envelope promise of those films. But I have a warm spot for it, and not just because I got a great long weekend in L.A. out of it.
