If the WM9 signal on the disc is actually storing 720 x 576 pixels and just "expanding" to 1024 horizontal upon playback then you're absolutely right...there would be no difference (of course, in that case I'd call it a native 720 x 576 signal being upscaled to 1024 x 576 just like you could do with any PAL signal). Another possible improvement even if it is limited to 720 x 576 pixels of res is that it could be an "unfiltered" signal encoded for maximum detail in the progressive-scan domain (most PAL and NTSC DVDs are filtered vertically in expectation of interlaced playback).

But is the WM9 on the disc storing the 1024 horizontal pixels to start with? If that's the case...there is the potential that the signal would have significantly more perceived horizontal detail than a 720 x 576 PAL source.

I'll have to check those AVS threads...I remember them too but can't remember the details!
