My beloved Attila was a Colorpoint Shorthair -- Seal Point -- with a shiny, shimmering coat and penetrating, liquid-blue eyes that seemed to stare into a person. Like all cats of the Siamese ilk, his personality was pronounced, his "meows" quite noticeable -- a cat's kind of feline.

Attila passed away at approximately 3:20 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time on Wednesday, August 6. He was fifteen and a half years old. Brought down by a combination of hyperthyroidism and kidney failure, Attila was the light of my life, my best friend, and -- believe it or not -- a loyal companion.

He had a very good life.

One memory in particular comes to mind. Back in the late fall or early winter of 1998 or thereabouts, I was, on one weeknight, walking to the kitchen. Since it was a little chilly, I decided to stand by the heater in the living room. A little tired, I sat down on an end table located near the heater.

Right then, Attila hopped up on the table and sat beside me. There we were, the two of us, side-by-side, soaking up a little heat. I turned toward him and said, "Aren't we a pair."

Attila leaned his head over to my shoulder and then rubbed into it. A couple of guys enjoying a chilly evening in Los Angeles.

Though I had fervently hoped Attila would make it to age 20, I find that I am not distraught but for one reason: At fifteen and a half, Attila had a good run. He was loved, his every need provided for. And he was happy.

Attila the Cat: 1993 - 2008. He is so deeply missed.

As soon as I saw the title of your post I knew what had happened. I'm very sorry for your loss and I know how you felt about Atilla because of the way you talked about him.

My cat, Blue is almost 20 years old and we have had her since she was about 2 (she was a stray so we're not sure). I have been expecting the worst for a while, but she seems to soldier on.

Attila was a lucky cat to have you for a friend.

Ah jeez very sorry to hear that Jack. I knew how much you loved Attila when I joined the forum 8 years ago, you kept mentioning him in your posts. I lost my cat a few years ago, it is depressing. He'll live on in your memories.

It is always terrible to lose a member of your family, be they four legged or two. My cat, Princess Tia, died a couple of years ago and is still missed. I suppose some people will think it strange but in a sense she is still with me. I had her cremated and I still have her ashes in a small wooden box, along with her collar.

You have my condolences on the loss of your cat Attila.

Sorry to hear the news of Attila's passing. I dread the same thing happening, at any moment, to my cat who is probably just a little older than Attila, and it's been a chore keep weight on my elderly cat, but you do what you can to make his life comfy as possible because he has been a good companion. RIP, Attila.

Ugh. This has been a bad year for kitties. Cees lost Mickey, I lost the Flufferdoodle and Katie Kat, and now Attila. I'm sorry it had to be this way.

My condolences to you all. I'd heard about the Fluffster and Katie Kat, but hadn't heard about Cees' loss, and now Attila, too.

But they all led wonderful, happy lives and your memories of them will live forever. I still smile when I think of my beloved kitty and she passed more than 10 years ago.

    RIP, feline friends.

I offer my condolences as well. Many situations in this life make our 4-legged friends the best ones we have. I am sorry for your loss.

    Aw, Jack. So sad.

But your sorrow is directly proportionate to the bond you shared with each other. In other words, it only hurts so much because you shared so much together.

I still find myself missing my yellow lab who's been gone two years now. I miss having him lay his big head down on top of my feet. Attila will always hold a special place in your heart...as Hudson does in mine.

How terrific that the two of you shared so many moments together...and took such good care of each other.

    Be well.

I know all too well how difficult it is to lose a loved cat. Jack, you have my deepest sympathies. Keep those happy memories in your heart.

Patrick, we have a an elderly cat whose appetite was waining. We took her to a specialist and he put her on mirtazapine, which has really perked up her appetite. Because an older cat has a harder time staying properly hydrated, we give her about 100 ml of sub-q fluids once a day. Between the two, we think it is really increasing the quality and duration of her life.

Edit: Just read Mike's comment, and it can't be said better.

Jack, I'm sorry for your loss. Presently I have two cats, and seeing them get and return affection means a great deal in my life. They fill a void that I never knew was there. I'm really sorry.

My condolences Jack. Sounds like you gave Attila a great life, and he returned the favor by being a great little companion. I have 3 cats all around the same age (8) and I'm not looking forward to the time when they start to go. It's a shame we outlive our pets but I bet you have some great memories, which are some consolation. Hard to think of a pet without smiling a little!

I'm sorry for your loss. I just recently had to give away my cat.

IMHO, the best thing to do is to replace him. Find another cat.
