I have a coworker who unwittingly just lost a ton of data due to a bad set of circumstances. His personal laptop drive crashed a day after the govt. took all our thumb drives which contained his latest backups and wiped them all and prepped them for destruction. The drive is now unbootable and would require a lab service to reconstruct. This is major $$$ he knows, but there seem to be reputable labs and a bunch of wanabees, and figuring out who is who seems to be a crapshoot.

Anyone have any experience here?

Awesome Pat, thanks! I think his corporate office is going to try to send it to a service they contract with, if that doesnt pan out i will pass on those suggestions.

The first is self-evident, but how do you know about the second? Is the disk physically not readable?
