These TV shows and films have a great nostalgic factor, collector's love them, and WAC is the perfect vessel to present them. Warner controls 100 years of assets, and they are trying to cover all bases, and their choices reflect quite a bit...
It is not that titles are less expensive to release. Warner obviously has remastered The Alaskans and WAC chose to release it on Blu-ray. Warner Archive seems to have to some input on titles they would like to release, but ultimately, they release. what is available to them from the studio...
If I remember correctly, George Feltenstein in a past podcast saying that the Lucy & Desi films were big sellers on DVD. I think Forever, Darling will make its way to Blu-ray at some point.
Sony does not have home video rights to The Last Emperor. It has never been released by them. Criterion currently has it licensed it from Hanway Films,
It's starting... most of the upcoming release pre-orders are gone now from Best Buy.com. Up until recently they listed pre-orders for early 2024 releases, Criterions, Shout factory etc. all gone now. Or at least at this moment.
I wish Best Buy would consider keeping the online purchase option. It has always been nice to have somewhere other than Amazon to purchase from. Yesterday my pre-order from Best Buy of The Way We Were UHD delivered to me.

My pre-ordered Best Buy order came in the mail today. I just watched the extended cut and thought it was quite good, and surprisingly did enhance the story. It is not just footage added for padding. The disc itself, is stunning. Sony delivers again with a superb 4k restoration.

We really don't know if Sydney Pollack would have minded if the film was altered or not. He might have been fine with it as long as the original theatrical cut was included (as it is.) There probably would have been an audio commentary by the both of them, and the subject would have been...
They should have placed George Feltenstein to curate a truly substantial group of sets that represent WB's history as a studio. No MGM, New Line or RKO should be included.
