MS has the money, so why not make a NEW processor that requires less ventilation
Because the millions of dollars and hundreds of man-years it costs to design and fabricate a processor isn't really worth it when the potential savings is a few dozen kiosks and a handful of consumer systems. Especially when all that effort might let the processor run 5C cooler.
The hard drive will be a much bigger source for system failure than overheating processors. Most people probably won't try to put their Xboxes in vacuum-sealed glass storage containers.

I live near several Best Buys, Circuit Citys, Good Guys and Frys Electronics. Most of the game consoles that run in open-air type of enclosures work. But the ones in those stupid glass case, no-one-shall-touch-this enclosures are, more often than not, glitching or broken. This includes PS1, PS2 and DCs. Yet the few XBox ones that die make headline news, and no mention of these other consoles.
Look, I have no love for MS and will probably only buy a Gamecube, but I think that article's writer just "has it in" for MS and XBox.

What's this about using the PS2 with it vertical? I've been using mine that way since I bought it (when the GT3 pack-in version was released) and I haven't noticed any scratched disc's.
Has this problem been fixed with more recent versions of the console?

Since I didn't see anyone mention this, Microsoft issued a statement that the intermittent freezing problem was being caused by a software glitch. Apparently some of the demos were built with a beta version of the video library that wasn't fully compatible with the final hardware in the kiosks. MS indicated that new discs were being manufactured and were going to be shipped to retailers.
If true, when retailers get these discs the problems should go away. We will see.

Todd,
The three Target stores in my area set up their GameCube kiosks yesterday, and two of the three GameCubes were malfunctioning out of the box. Only one store (the one on Fruitville Road in Sarasota, for those scoring at home) had a working GameCube.
I guess that reduces your options to a PS2.
Have any of you folks seen a PS2 kiosk not working? If so, please report it here, and we can save Todd $300.

Microsoft reps called my store to ask how things were going with our kiosk. We have had no technical problems (after figuring out how to turn the damn volume down).
My associate who took the call mentioned that the included demo disc sucks and that people did not seem at all interested in Munch.
The rep responded saying that's been a typical response as the demo disc was rushed and we could expect an updated disc in a week or two.

I was at the cubeclub at the Mall of America.
One of the first people in the door at 6pm.
The asked me if I'd like to play pikmin for a chance to get another entry in the gamecube give away.
I said sure, and they ushered me into a little 'cube' area with a nice panasonic setup.
I proceeded to play the tutorial.
Then I started level 1. After about 3 minutes in level one, it locked up hard. No response from anything.
The guy there said 'huh.' and rebooted it, and let me fill out another entry.
So xbox's crash, gamecubes crash, n64's crash, psx's crach, ps2's crash, hell I've seen my snes & nes crash.
Although never my gameboy. hmm...
