FROM UNIVERSAL PICTURES HOME ENTERTAINMENT
Universal City, California, July 20, 2022 – Rob Zombie (3 From Hell, House of 1000 Corpses, The Devil’s Rejects) digs up the origin story of everyone’s favorite monster family in the brand-new movie, THE MUNSTERS, a hilarious and heartfelt comedy about Lily and Herman’s courtship that is sure to surprise and delight fans of all ages. Showcasing Zombie’s signature stylized look and vibrant color palette, the film is available to own as a Collector’s Edition on Digital, Blu-ray™, and DVD on September 27, 2022 from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment and Universal 1440 Entertainment, a production arm of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group. Packed with zany humor, larger-than-life characters, and a groovy 60’s vibe, THE MUNSTERS Collector’s Edition is filled with over an hour of exclusive content including unseen behind-the-scenes footage with writer and director Rob Zombie and cast as well as feature commentary with Rob Zombie, taking viewers deeper into this hauntingly sidesplitting adventure and the kooky undead family, just in time for Halloween.

Featuring an incredible cast of familiar horror genre icons, the film stars Sheri Moon Zombie (The Devil’s Rejects, House of 1000 Corpses, 31) as Lily, Jeff Daniel Phillips (3 From Hell, The Lords of Salem) as Herman Munster, and Daniel Roebuck (The Fugitive, U.S. Marshals) as The Count alongside a multi-talented supporting cast including Richard Brake (Batman Begins, “Game of Thrones”), Jorge Garcia (“Lost”, “Hawaii Five-O”), Sylvester McCoy (The Hobbit franchise), Catherine Schell (On Her Majesty’s Secret Service), Cassandra Peterson (Elvira: Mistress of the Dark), and Tomas Boykin (I AM) as well as special guest appearances by original “The Munsters” cast members Butch Patrick and Pat Priest!

From writer/director Rob Zombie comes the strangest love story ever told. Lily is just your typical 150-year-old, lovelorn vampire looking for the man of her nightmares . . . that is until she lays eyes on Herman, a seven-foot-tall, green experiment with a heart of gold. It’s love at first shock as these two ghouls fall fangs over feet in this crazy Transylvanian romance. Unfortunately, it’s not all smooth sailing in the cemetery as Lily’s father The Count has other plans for his beloved daughter’s future, and they don’t involve her bumbling beau, Herman. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll howl at the moon as The Munsters make their way to Mockingbird Lane!

This is supposed to be a Netflix exclusive, so I have doubts this disc release will actually happen. At least not for another year after the Netflix premiere.

It's only value to Netflix is if they have an exclusive period. I don't think they would buy a film if that wasn't part of the contract deal. For past major studio films that have been sold to streamers, that's usually one year (at least as seen with Paramount titles).

Ron's post seems to just be an Amazon placeholder, so I don't think there's been any official press release thus far.

I read an article in USA Today this morning that said the Blu-ray comes out September 27th and the Netflix exclusive airing will be later this year.

That would be surprising, but I don't have anything to contradict it so it's very possible.

It just seems like it would be an anomaly in Netflix's business model based on past practices.

And I agree with you on that. But Netflix is scrambling to stop the loss of subscriber, so their thoughts may be changing. I think the studios have have them over a barre.

Netflix has a deal with Universal 1440 Entertainment (the studio's direct-to-video arm) that has been going on for years, with many films getting a day and date release on Netflix and home video (digital and physical),

I know I'm getting old, but I coulda sworn they were planning at least a modest theatrical release. Does anyone else remember this?

I thought it was going to be a theatrical release as well.

However, after watching the trailer, it looks kind of hokey, and perhaps (and I am only making an assumption) it was determined that Netflix would be a better platform to release it to.

EDIT: Researching this a bit further, it looks like the film was greenlit by Universal Studios through its 1440 products division which means it was destined for a streaming service.

Hmm, okay, thanks. Too bad; that art direction screams for the big screen.

Early word had it as a Peacock streaming exclusive, as Universal and Peacock are sister companies. But then somewhere in the past couple of weeks it made a left turn to Netflix, presumably for a chunk of money. So apparently Universal decided the money in their pocket was preferable to providing exclusive content for their sibling streamer.

Universal's 1440 Entertainment division has a longstanding distribution arrangement with Netflix. The early rumors of this going to Peacock were just people making assumptions without looking into it.
