Sony Electronics just provided a technical briefing related to the development of Silicon Crystal [X-tal] Reflective Display (SXRD), a new display technology that delivers full high-definition resolution (1920 x 1080) on a display panel, with over 3000:1contrast ratio. The company demonstrated how SXRD technology provides smooth, film-like picture quality unavailable in previous fixed pixel displays.
This could be the next great technology for high definition displays.

The high resolution and contrast is very impressive as is 2003 products.

This is indeed an exciting announcement, and it's created a flood of discussion on the net, esp. at AVS. While this technology isn't new (D-ILA from JVC for years, LCOS from Hitachi & Toshiba), it looks like Sony has made some significant refinements that increase performance. The 3000:1 contrast ratio won't be that high in an actual product, though, so don't get too excited. Still, a real world product with half that would be over double the current performance of JVC & Hitachi projectors, and the resolution is of course to die for!

Nobody knows yet at what price point Sony is likely to bring out this technology. Sounds like they're planning both FP and RP devices. It'd be great to see this push HD2 DLP pricing down from the $10k range.
