And in the same communication with Bill Hunt (see his Daily) they addressed the combo-problems. Also: Toshiba addressed those problems as well. Read Bill's site. The cause seems to be known now.

Funny, all three of those reported discs happen to play fine in my machine (and several other members reported the same). As we learn now, it was a certain batch that had layer problems and the problem seems to be under control. Again: read Bill Hunt's Daily columns.

How severely were you affected by this problem, Dave, given your bitter comment?

I would take the statement @ face value and try not to read anything too deep into it.

Recently, I had an opposing lawyer trying to put all sorts of spin into letters I had written on a file in which he was opposing me. suffice it to say that I had to tell him to quit reading between the lines and that what I had said was what I had said; no more, no less. I think this statement should be treated the same way.

At this time I think any studio that doesn't have a large financial obligation to either format (i.e. Sony) would be completely foolish to show unwavering support far into the distant future. If I was running Universal, Disney, Fox, etc. a one year time frame would to be appropriate to me.

Apples and oranges, of course, the comparison makes no sense at all in this thread.

It takes some time to find out what is causing an error on DVD, e.g. Sony didn't reply at all yet to why Casino Royale and several other recent SD DVDs refuse to play on several players. (In this case I'm not worried very much personally, because it played fine on my HD-A1). Apparently they have to sort out these things.
Contradicting a false rumour can be done much quicker, if it's important enough.

But in fact, Universal was extremely fast in addressing the combo-error as well!

I fail to see how they could break a supposed exclusivity contract without actually releasing titles on another format.

I don't think the story said anything about BREAKING a contract, just that the contract was about to expire. But I have doubts that there ever was such a contract.
