Marketing whiz Neal Page (Steve Martin) finds his life crossed with shower curtain ring salesman Del Griffith (John Candy) as both try to get back to Chicago from NYC in order to make it home in time for Thanksgiving dinner. The universe conspires against both of them as their travel plans are foiled again and again. First their flight is cancelled midway home as snow diverts them to Wichita. In Wichita they try to get a train home only to have it the engine erupt in a puff of smoke. Cars are no better, with Del driving off road in a hilarious mishap. While they barely survive they watch in horror as their rental bursts into flames. All along the way we learn what makes both men tick, from Neal’s high strung anxiety and poshness battling Del’s chatty but working class personality.
