This is a shame.

I never watched Guys and Dolls but bought this
edition blindly because I knew it was a classic.

Now I don't even want to own it because of this transfer
and framing issue.

You know, there was a time when Sony was the studio putting
out the best transfers. That was back in the day when they had
their Hi-Def Center. The other studios couldn't come close to the
quality of transfers Sony was churning out.....

...but these few years have proven otherwise and it's really sad.
There's good people over at Sony and they have been very good
to this forum. It's just sad to see all these issues with their transfers
and blatant disregard for not releasing product in its proper ratio.

The best looking transfer of Guys and Dolls was the last THX transfer. sadly, it had the worst sound of the lasers.
High end was also missing there.
This film should be 2:55 with full surrounds.
I remember going to a tribute to Joe Mankeiwicz at the directors guild and they were showing clips from his films in chronological order and when the they went from a clip of Julius Caesar (1:33) and opened up to 2:55 for Guys and Dolls, the audience gasped.

I never picked this DVD up, but recently thought about it until I looked up this old thread. Has there been any indication that Sony plans to fix this? I assume not.

They've been doing some good things lately, so one would hope they would go back and fix the framing problems in a future Blu-ray release rather than just use the same zoomboxed transfer. Hopefully they know that their target audience would demand that.

Above all, it's blurry. Simply that. Blurry. How do studios permit these transfers to reach the public, and why?

Picked this up at Big Lots awhile back for $3. Haven't watched yet, but it's probably worth that much.
