Does anyone know if the disks are required to be in the machine all timea or do the games install like pc software?

Did you even watch it? Try it before you knock it bud.
Xbox games will always be played off of the media disk and never installed on to the HD. The Xbox will use the HD to store game upgrades, game saves and stream data only.
