Notes on my reviews: I do not offer plot summaries in most cases, as these can be found on a million other sites, but rather focus instead on what people want to know: the image and sound presentation, default playback settings, subtitles, audio choices, etc. My equipment: Panasonic TC-P55UT50 Plasma monitor (3-D capable); Panasonic DMP-BDT220 3-D Blu-ray player; LG BD-360 all-region Blu-ray player; Denon AVE-E200 5.1 Surround receiver. All aspect ratios are physically measured on the Panasonic screen, which has been set to eliminate overscan.
LABEL: Arrow SOUND: English 2.0 Stereo Running Time: 97 m Subtitles: English. HD BONUS MATERIAL: See below. CHAPTERS: 12
We all want a definitive book or documentary about master animator Ray Harryhausen, but we'll probably never get one that covers everything and is satisfactory to every one of us. The man only worked on fifteen feature films, but like Kubrick or Lean, his few works are so superior to the competition that he remains legendary to this day.
For what it is, this film is damned good. It has bunches of the usual talking-head interviews (but with true luminaries whose hero Harryhausen was, inspiring them toward their own eventual greatness), but also has plenty of film clips and behind-the-scenes footage, some extremely rare.
The image quality is overall very good, most of it 1080p. Some clips are necessarily standard def. But the disc is presented with a ratio of 1.78:1.
Supplements are many: There is a full-length commentary; interviews with Rick Baker, Simon Pegg and many more; interview outtakes; a message to Ray by his fans; deleted scenes; footage from the set of 7th Voyage Of Sinbad; Q&A; Trailer for this film, and a Harryhausen trailer reel. On my copy, a cardboard outer sleeve was included.
Highly recommended.
