I live in California, USA and recently purchased Canadian model DVR recorder DVR-550H-S to replace my American Pioneer DVR-420H with the hard drive.

I called the Long Beach, California Pioneer service, but since it is a Canadian model, they suggested I email them. Maybe someone here can help.

My problem:
I set it up, and it had an American plug adaptor for the European plug so all fine and good. After connecting cables to my television and audio gear and turning it on, it seemed to default to the PAL mode, but I need to change it to NSTC. But the picture from the DVR just rolls and is unreadable, so I can't read the start up menu to change any settings. The language seems to be Italian. Surprisingly, putting in a NTSC disc, it plays fine, but accessing the menu in the DVD mode, instead of the HDD, most of the settings are dimmed out. Can someone help me getting it to the NTSC system.

Many thanks...
John

There is a long thread for the 540H-S over at avsforum. One of the regulars there is Canadian and might have that unit. I know he has posted buying at least one newer model than his 540.

YMMV

Thanks Mike....

The place I purchased it sent me a PDF on what buttons to push and stuff without any onscreen help. It worked.
