Two women, a turquoise Thunderbird, the ride of a lifetime. With this pop-culture landmark, screenwriter Callie Khouri and action auteur Ridley Scott rewrote the rules of the road movie, telling the story of two best friends who find themselves transformed into accidental fugitives during a weekend getaway gone wrong—leading them on a high-speed Southwest odyssey as they elude police and discover freedom on their own terms. Propelled by irresistible performances from Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis (plus Brad Pitt in a sexy, star-making turn)—and nominated for six Academy Awards, winning one for Khouri—the exhilaratingly catharticThelma & Louise stands as cinema’s ultimate ode to ride-or-die female friendship.

Funny how this is the first Ridley to make it into the collection when there was some rumors going around that it might be Blade Runner.

Blade Runner is more deserving of being in the collection but I'm sure this picture is now thought to be one of the most important in cinema history. Someday it may top the Sight & Sound list. A surprise, but I will pick this up.

Blade Runner already has pretty much definitive releases on Blu-ray and 4K. There's not much Criterion could do with it at this point.

I see some chatter on Facebook today with people begging Criterion to do Black Rain. They must not have watched that one in a very long time, because it is not good. Not good at all.

Well, they (or Warner) could do an "Ultimate 4K UHD Edition" that includes all 5 versions of the movie in 4K with lossless audio, and they could upgrade the PQ on the existing bonus features from SD to HD, but in terms of new bonus content, what's out there already is pretty exhaustive.

The archival cuts haven't aged well transfer wise and only have lossy audio. So yeah there's room for improvement.

Thelma & Louise is a very culturally significant film. I think that’s a big part of its appeal to Criterion. Other than Alien, it might be my favorite Ridley Scott movie. It might be the last one of his that I really liked.

Not to mention that it launched Brad Pitt's career into the stratosphere.
