Peter Jackson, the New Zealand filmmaker probably best known for his extraordinary documentary, Forgotten Silver, directed two trilogies. I’m told that the labour on those films was in repayment to New Line for certain licenses to the early works of Colin McKenzie.
The two trilogies, both extraordinary series of films, are based upon the original animated classic, released in 1977, entitled The Hobbit. Once again, all roads lead to New Line.
Warner Bros. has gone back to the original elements for the two trilogies, actually six films, inclusive of extended versions, and created 4k files, which literally leap off the screen – both looking even a bit more highly resolved than the 1977 original.
Resolution, and color are spectacular.
The early arrival of these sets, in heavy cases within yet another heavy slipcase, make for perfect Holiday gifts for those who appreciate 4k media.
Enough of you are probably at least aware on a basic level of these films, so no reason to waste words...

I was waiting to see who’d be the first with actual facts. Saves research. Nice one-sheets. Was also waiting for a mention of underlying lit, ie the original original Bradbury & Evans parts for Lord, as well as the Penny Deadfuls for the darker Hobbit. Hopefully autographed by George R.R. Martin.

Lord was based upon the animated feature distributed by UA.

The two series are based on immensely popular series of books by J.R.R. Tolkien published in 1937 (The Hobbit) and 1954 (The Lord of the Rings). The animated film was just another adaptation.

Just because you don’t expect to get the 4K versions doesn’t mean that the unexpected won’t occur.

If you already own prior releases, I see little reason to wait.

Sure, they promise new bonus materials, but c'mon - how much can they dig out of the vault?

We already have exhaustive supplements - I can't imagine the new stuff will be all that valuable!

I'm waiting on the special editions with the idea that if the new supplements aren't that impressive (which, like you said, how much more can there be?) or if the special edition is really pricey, I'll pick these releases up instead. Like all the other LOTR releases, these seem to be likely candidates for a very good sale price.

Depends if bonus features are important to you. Apparently these sets are movie only, not even the commentaries are included. So I think the choice is, get this set if new bonus features aren’t important and keep the older BD/DVD versions for features, or wait until next summer and get the deluxe set that’s supposed to include all the new and old bonus material.

My intention was to wait for the set next summer, but I just rewatched my Blu-ray versions and concluded that I don’t enjoy or watch the films enough to justify buying them again at all. That was not what I had been expecting when I sat down to watch them again.
