The release of Casanova couldn't be more perfectly timed to sync with that of Criterion's "Essential" collection.
Casanova, released in 1976, is a colorful oddity. Interesting, but almost without soul. It has all the trappings of a Fellini film, moving camera, great color, odd personalities…
But, at least for me, it never came together, as many of his classics do.
Regardless, this is a wonderful time to attempt a collection of Fellini.
Kino's new Blu-ray, seemingly licensed from Universal, has the same opening restoration information as many of those in the Essential collection. 100 anniversary of Fellini's birth, etc.
It's a beautiful Blu-ray, with a nicely resolved, properly grained, stable image, and superb color.
