    Onkyo 605 or Panasonic SA-XR57?

Ok, I got the 605. It seems very nice but I can't tell too much because I don't get the HDTV until tomorrow. Still, for CD and FM it sounds great.

    Onkyo 605 or Panasonic SA-XR57?

Ouch, my arm just got twisted off. As of now, I get the 605. I was over at J&R today looking at it. I work about 6 blocks away.

    Coax/Optical vs HDMI for sound

What's LFE? I googled and see that lots of receivers seem to have problems but some are fixed by firmware. Still no idea what LFE is though. I see that folks really like the Panasonic, but much of those posts are from last year (AVS forum). I thought about the Sony, even though I promised...

    Onkyo 605 or Panasonic SA-XR57?

The Pana is $240, Onkyo is $400. Big difference. I'm not an audiophile, and mostly this will be used to watch HDTV. The cablebox outputs HDMI as does my upconverting DVD player. I don't watch too many movies. My plan thus far is to run the HDMI outputs to the TV and coax/optical into the...

    Odd subwoofer wiring

There's one box and both speakers lead through it, so two hot/ground pairs. Ok for now I think.

    Coax/Optical vs HDMI for sound

Thanks. The SA-XR57 does have an HDMI input although the output is only 1080i. I've been thinking that this will prove sufficient in my price range. I'm not planning on passing the signal through to the TV. The cablebox doesn't have PCM, does it? That will only be coming from HD-DVD? For now...

    Odd subwoofer wiring

I suspect that the subwoofers are outside of the budget for my receiver. I'm going to see what these sound like with a real 5.1 source and the new receiver. Then I'll possibly get new speakers. I'm really not much of an audiophile so I might get by as is for a bit.

    Coax/Optical vs HDMI for sound

Oh, I meant that I would run the coax/optical directly from the cablebox or dvd player into the receiver, not through the TV. HDMI from device to TV, Coax/Opt from device to receiver. But, it would be nicer to run the HDMI directly from all devices to the receiver and then onto the TV. Hmm...

    Coax/Optical vs HDMI for sound

As a newbie to the HDTV/HDMI world, I'm look for a receiver and was wondering why I would want to run HDMI video through a receiver when I can run all the sources right to the TV and coax/optical to the receiver. I'm not shooting for high-end here; I'm thinking of the Panasonic SA-XR57. The...

    Odd subwoofer wiring

I'm upgrading some stuff since I'm finally buying an HDTV for the living room. I have a fairly decent old Cambridge Soundworks Ensemble pair with a subwoofer. Then there is a center speaker and two rears. The receiver is a Yamaha that is essentially stereo but has fake surround sound...
