    Help With New HT

Since the price is negligable, go with Cat6 vs. Cat5 (or Cat5e). "It's one louder, isn't it." If you run two lines, one can carry your phone line if desired . (actually up to 4 phone lines as ethernet cable is 4-pair wire) Keep in mind these wires should be "home run", meaning that they...

Well I am finally starting my HT room

it's roughly $5 per 4 sq ft section (2'x2'). Even though water is not seeping in (good thing), moisture still will come up through your floor and may cause annoyances (stains, mold, smells). I notice you're in WI so may have chilly winters. I'm in MN myself, and the small R-factor was a big...

Well I am finally starting my HT room

Steve, good luck! I just finished an ~1100 sf basement, and it took me a tad over 8 weeks (roughly a year ;) ) As a matter of fact we should have our final inspection(s) tomorrow (hooray). One thing I did that I'd recommend is putting a subfloor down over the concrete. I used Dricore...

    sheetrocking curved ceiling question

I think it's typical to run the sheets long along the long wall, but I'm not an expert. Remember to stagger your seams when doing two-ply, and to have longer screws for that second layer. -jim

Carpet vs "floating" floor in basement HT?

by "floating floor" do you mean an engineered floor, like Pergo (aka fake wood)? Some subfloors can be floating as well. I just finished my basement and used Dricore ( http://www.dricore.com/ ) as a subfloor and it was pretty easy to install (as it's floating, nailess, glueless). I have a...

Metal Studs for Framing in HVAC Ducts

we built a soffit using metal studs as well, and I haven't noticed any 'tin' sound or buzzing. For fire-code reasons we did have to seal the ceiling within the soffit area, and I used a spray foam to fill the gaps. Just something you may have to keep in mind.

good or bad thing, interior new wall building question

you can probably leave the 'old' wall as-is and build over it, leaving the gap. Just don't have two vapor barriers, so if there's already one up behind the existing drywall leave it and build out. You may want to fill it with some insulation to deaden the space, but I'm not expert in that area...

    Home Theater Set-up

I have a Yamaha RX-V1400, Axiom M60ti's, VP100, and 2 sets of QS4's, and a SVS 25-31PCi... and am VERY happy with them. I know speakers are a very subjective topic, so take it for what it's worth. You're listed setup is a notch above mine, I can't help but think it'll sound terrific. I...

What instrument do you play and how did it affect your choice in speaker?

I play guitar, and in my hayday played mostly hard rock or harder rock. Maybe that's why when I read the reviews of Axiom M60ti's being "in your face" I went with them for my mains (and now have a full Axiom setup). *shrug*

I actually tried to do a left-old-speaker right-new-speaker test with a Journey CD and the receiver on 'STRAIGHT' to avoid coloring. It turned out to be difficult to adjust the balance as I'm still not totally familiar with the new receiver. doh! Via that test the high end seemed similar, but...

hey matt, my axioms arrived today, and man-oh-man it was hard to finish the day at work. :) I quickly connected everything and went through the YPAO (yamaha rx-v1400) and then threw in Star Wars Ep. I - the pod race scene (I needed to test some good surround fx with a 7.1 setup)...

One thing that I'm disappointed in with my SVS 20-39 PCi...

heheheh woops... I meant 25-31PCi. :) Just today we took delivery of a set of Axiom speakers (M60's, VP100, and a second set of QS4's for a 7.1 setup) I'm really itchin' to get home, and really itchin' for tomorrow. I think I feel a cold coming on... *cough* *cough* ;) congrats on...

    my home theater

Yup! Dricore it is. It was a breeze to install. I actually got a bit lucky going around corners and such, as once you start you're locked in (pardon the pun ;) ) I didn't measure accurately and ended up with a 1" strip for parts of the last row, that was really akward to put in. It's also...

    New HT Construction

Scott, I love watching a build-in-progress, yours is looking great! I do have a question though: it looks like you used a faced-batting which doesn't require a vapor barrier, and then an exterior grade housewrap on the inside. Housewrap is not really a vapor barrier and is permiable, and...

Fronts, Surrounds and a Center for around $1,000, options…

keep in mind that though shipping is included in the price (of the Axiom's), return shipping is not. So if you want to return them you will have to pay your own shipping. I think that's why Scott suggested trying out just a pair first.

Hi Matt, Oddly enough I just put in an order for a set of Axioms yesterday, and my soon-to-be old main's are a set of Advents which I've been content with (though all my current speaker seem lacking in mid-range). I'm getting M60's, VP100, and QS4's... so I can try to give my impression of...

New house, will have a dedicated HT room. Placement and construction questions.

I recently finished off my basement and used Dricore (www(dot)dricore(dot)com) for a floating subfloor. It's roughly 3/4" thick, and may be what you're looking for. One key piece of advice, frame your door openings with this measurement in mind. Unfortunatly I decided on the subfloor after...
