I found a used Acurus 5 channel on ebay for $550. I let the 1050 run the rear center, as its not used often. The sound quality is amazing. It will help the sound quality at low volumes as well.
I have a Crown ce-2000 with dancing lights that indicate clipping. I don't think it lowers the ouput until it is forced to shut off. This is from their website:

Signal: A green LED for each channel which flashes when a very low-level...
I'm using my Shiva in the 95L ported enclosure. I believe Dan likes this alignment as well. I didn't use a flared port, but I did use a piece of 4" pvc with an elbow and haven't notices any port noise. I would recommend a jasper jig if you are looking for an excuse to get more tools! It came...
I shall have my buddy look around, literally they are across from his front door. He is the only person that hopes it takes forever to finish the big dig, because once they do, his place is worth so much he will have to move.
Marc,
Can I interest you in a prebuilt sub? I got a new one yesterday and its project time yet again! LOL. At any rate you can come demo my stuff. The cambridge sub is muddy as anything and probably has too much boost to make it sound like "real bass".
Or, I will be needing some sonotube...
I couldn't pass it up for $100 new in the box. ;)
Chris,
Did you make a sonosub? What size port did you use?
I guess I need to hunt down some sonotube, because otherwise I will have a 150 pound+ enclosure.
I just got an Earthquake Magma 15" sub, and they aren't much help for a decent box design. I am going to use this sub in my home theater, so I want to design a box that will play low and still have decent midbass output.
The specs on it are:
FS: 24.7 Hz
BL: 10.4741 tm
SPL: 90.6 dB...
I built two of these before the current drivers were out as well. I used a 3.25 cu ft. and a 3x8" port. (I'm going from memory on the port size) Of course, that is not going to get the same extension as the 5+ cu ft enclosures being talked about here. They handle 250+ watts in that setup, I...
Can you build things? basic cabinets for speakers? or just assemble some kits? That would be the best way to maximize your limited funds, and the sound quality would be 2-4x higher than what you can buy in that price range.
Stephen, Kyle has a good point. (he often has lots of them) What did you spend on that RatShack sub? I'd take it back and start from scratch. Trying to make something work better than designed, in this case getting a radioshack subwoofer to sound musical, is a tall order. I would put 2 pounds...
I've read on MAD and PE that the rotozip is skittish and squirrely to use. You don't need a plunge router, I use a regular craftsman router. Just lower it slowly into the MDF. Also, I found with my Jasper Jig, if you find a nail that is the same size as the centering pin, then cut the head...
The swan 305 is a great woofer for the price range you're in. I have mine in 3 cu ft. ported. You could try it in your enclosure ported and see if you like the sound, or, I would stuff it with polyfil and use a pipe stopper to make it a sealed enclosure.

They explain it way better here than I ever could:

I found a deal on it here:

But haven't ordered from them since I don't need one currently.
I have a CE-2000. I got it for a really good price here http://www.woodwindbrasswind.com/pro...72118&id=71174|
with free shipping.
Oh, and I didn't have to use speakons as it came with the regular terminals at no extra charge.
Tell me more about the input sensivity adjustment. Will it make...
I've got the ported version of the 281s in Boston if anyone wants to audition them. Just thought I'd throw that out for any lurkers. Dan, stop making such cool stuff. I mean it. Now my roommate wants me to make him a cabinet for the matching center and then another small 281 cabinet to move...
Can I ask why so many drivers? If you use multiple full range drivers you negate the best purpose of them, which is using them as a single point source. They don't of course handle that many watts, but too many drivers is not the way to get there either. There are several bookshelf designs...
I'd go with a 10" if you are going to make a subwoofer.
The peerless XLS 10" is designed for really small boxes, as are some of the Daytons. http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showd...D=105707&DID=7
You can put the titanic 10" in a box of the size you mention. Their EBS alignment is a 1.4 cu ft...
I've contemplated building one of these as well. Would concrete work for the top? Then you could hopefully set a drink on it. I would put about 2" of concrete and set the sides (already built) into the wet concrete to cure and solidify.
I have a Crown CE-2000. 450x2 at 8 ohms, and 650x2 at 4 ohms. Or, 1950 watts bridged mono into 4 ohms.
It's mean, and yes I can clip my Shiva easily. I am using 1 Shiva in the 95L ported box recommended by adire. My other 12 is a swan by madisound, I built it about 6 years ago. I can set the...
I can come up with a short piece on do receivers have built in sub amps. I had those issues years ago when I wanted big sub power but had trouble finding a receiver with preouts even.
Some of the jeep guys use the MailBox Etc. to receive stuff in buffalo, then drive across and get it and save on customs and what not. That is probably not practical as you may not be near the border, but it works for Jeeping stuff as the net value is high and so is the shipping.
Marc,
I'm in the Boston area. (Medford) I got a kind of sonotube at Home Depot. Its not as thick as the real thing I think.
I have pictures here:

I am finishing up some Adire 281s with my roommate, and I made the 95L shiva box, its amazing. I don't know...
My brother has the CE-1000 and I have the CE-2000. They are very powerful. The fan kicks on rarely, and the variable speed is nice in keeping it from going at full tilt. However, they are quite susceptible to bad wiring, I had to use ground lifting plugs to get rid of most of the ground loop...

Aimed squarely at the DIYer who wants great results for cheap. The owner is a great guy, and his products really do sound phenomial. You may need new speakers though, as his gear is single ended tube, making about 3-4 watts.
