Today I just got around to begin watching Hunt for Red October which I recorded to my DVR last week off of the "Universal HD" channel on DirecTV. I was somewhat shocked to discover that the beginning section of the movie in which Connery and his crew speak in Russian was not subtitled in...
I'm looking to purchase Mulholland Drive in HD DVD. However, is there any potential downside to this? I realize HD DVD does not currently have regional encoding, but I didn't know if there were other issues I should be concerned about before making these sorts of purchases.
I have had the A2 for nearly a week now and have experienced occasional audio dropouts. I currently have my audio connected via optical cable. The dropouts are infrequent (one or two per movie) and brief (fraction of a second). However, they have occurred often enough that I know they're not a...
Well, even though I do not yet have an HD-DVD player, last week I bought my first disk (Mission: Impossible III) and immediately loaned it to my pal who has an HD-A1. In return, next week he's going to loan me his player for the whole week along with all the discs he's already purchased. I have...
Something the Lord Made is a film made for HBO last year that received a somewhat low profile release this past week. I just finished watching it and felt compelled to encourage others who have not seen this amazing film to get your hands on a copy of this DVD. This true story about two early...
WB Home Video-- I just got my "Gangsters Collection" box from Amazon. I haven't even opened up this puppy yet but all I can say as I look at this box is "how come the other studios don't put as much time and care into their classic movies as Warner Brothers"? Some real creativity, thought and...
I realize this is a dumb question, but here goes... I am currently using an old Toshiba DVD player (not progressive scan) with a Toshiba 42H81 widescreen HDTV with 3:2 pulldown ("Cinema" mode in the Toshiba lingo) enabled. Now that progressive scan DVD players are so incredibly inexpensive I...
CNN is reporting that the great Art Carney has died. Although he was probably best known for "The Honeymooners", he had many wonderful film roles in his career. I think one of my favorites was Going in Style, which I long to see released on DVD someday. Rest in Peace, Art. Link Removed
I pre-ordered this set two weeks ago from Digital Eyes, usually a very reliable vendor. Much to my surprise, it never shipped and the status on their website now shows "Temp. Sold Out". I cancelled my order and hit the B&M stores this morning. Best Buy: no copies. Circuit City: no copies...
This is AWESOME news!!!! Alison Krauss and Union Stations fans rejoice. A two-disc live concert DVD is due to be released on July 15th. From http://alisonkrauss.com,
Just watched this movie a couple of days ago, and I have a question: When Rachel (Amanda Peet) goes to have lunch with D.H. (Jeff Goldblum), he takes one look at her and then gets up and leaves. Did he do this because he could tell how strung out she was on heroin or did he just suddenly decide...
I know that it's not anamorphic, but is the transfer of The Fabulous Baker Boys DVD any good at all? I'd really like to pick this one up and I have a feeling that the odds of seeing an SE any time in the near future are pretty much nil.

Here's is a funny piece from USA Today. I checked out the more expensive DVD of the two mentioned in the article and it's actually in anamorphic widescreen. It's kind of an amusing idea for those of us who don't have a fireplace.

The Digital Bits is reporting that The New Zoo Revue is coming to DVD later this month. Does anyone else besides me remember this show? Auugghh! I hadn't even had a passing thought about Freddie the Frog and Henrietta the Hippo in over twenty years and now that I read this article I can't get...
This is one movie that I truly long to own on DVD. Does anyone know who currently owns the rights? Is it Universal? I've never seen Pirates of Penzance in its correct aspect ratio. Heck, I don't think I've ever even viewed it with stereo sound!
This is one catalog title that deserves some...
Personally, I don't find this "bonus" particularly appetizing, but I'm sure some Tarantino fans will.

According to DVDFile.com Steve Buscemi's Trees Lounge is getting reissued next month. However, Artisan is repotedly rehashing the same non-anamorphic transfer. Not only is the current DVD not enhanced for 16x9, but the picture is quite soft and the colors are washed out.
This film deserves...
Yet another episode in the neverending saga of clueless Best Buy employees. Last week the local Best Buy Sunday advertisement mentioned that they would have the new Monty Python and the Holy Grail SE available on Tuesday, Oct. 23 for $19.99.
A couple of days ago I went into the local Best Buy...
Attention all fans of Richard Rush's The Stunt Man, DVDFile has listed the specs of the impending DVD release, and it looks fantastic. See for yourself!

I realize that the Toshiba 42H81 model is not out yet. However, when I called Best Buy last night the salesperson had never heard of the set and didn't think that they would be offering it. I find this hard to believe, though, since they already have the related 50H81 sitting in their showroom...
I'm very anxious to get my hands on Brian DePalma's Blow Out. Has anyone had a chance to preview it yet? I'm praying that this will be one of MGM's "good" discs (transfer-wise).

I'm seriously considering purchasing this set, but I haven't actually seen one for myself yet. Will the top accommodate a typical center channel speaker? I've got a JBL Northridge (8.5" deep) and I'm trying to figure out if I'll have to build some kind of support for it.
