And which bucket would Finian’s Rainbow fall into? Isn’t that similar to PYW in that it’s a 1947 stage hit retrofitted for the revolutionary 60’s audience.
On another note I hope one day soon we’ll get Mr. Chips on at least Blu-ray. It’s long overdue and the print on TCM is not that great. I...
Aliens to me in a theater yielded an experience only surpassed by Apocalypse Now. A brilliant film. And I am psyched after reading this excellent review (thanks!) and now have to get this!
Aliens and The Abyss laserdisc sets were the only way I’m aware of back then to see the extended cuts before DVD. And both were THX Certified as was True Lies too. The Abyss was the first ever one certified at least in No America!
I also still have a BetaMax and my original ViewMaster projector...
I saw The Abyss in Dec when it had a one night showing in theaters and thought it looked and sounded great if not better compared to the original as I remembered. However I did notice that grain was all but gone. But it gained in image detail so it didn’t bother me and that film is more of a...
I too remember the original in the theater being very grainy in most of the film's dark scenes which just added to the tension as your eyes were constantly on the lookout for anything and everything. And then a scene or two would be less so and brighter to relieve some of the suspense. I liked...
While it may have a great back story it’s not a great film but an important film for its time IMHO
Rather hokey and driven by star power alone.
Its subject would be much more effectively handled in a few years later by Norman Lear on TV on many of his hit shows.
Curious- Is there muchfilm grain intact to get that image quality? I don't recall from seeing this theatrically and in my Twilight Time release for this to be a big budget visual treat and more akin to a goood road movie.
My favorite line which occurs in a lifeboat from Robert Hiches to Molly Brown is:
“And there'll be one less on this boat,
if you don’t shut that hole in your face!”
Thankfully that’s not cut!
It happened to me too. I had purchased the Family Guy Christmas special episode where Stewie goes to the North Pole many years ago. I wanted to watch it this past holiday and it was gone. And iTunes no longer sells individual Family Guy episodes. My only option I believe to see it was to...
Yet another film I was extremely disappointed in with the TCM print presented last summer. Now ordered and I think I need a job in my retirement to pay for all of these wonderful new treasures! Please give us Abel Gance’s Napoleon soon!!
Thanks and understood. But it must be a lot better than the original Blu which is still included and I get the streaming code for the 4K as well which looked great when I streamed it over the holidays.
Btw it is now no longer streaming for free but The Holiday is now effective 1/1 on Netflix-not...
