And which bucket would Finian’s Rainbow fall into? Isn’t that similar to PYW in that it’s a 1947 stage hit retrofitted for the revolutionary 60’s audience.
On another note I hope one day soon we’ll get Mr. Chips on at least Blu-ray. It’s long overdue and the print on TCM is not that great. I...
Aliens to me in a theater yielded an experience only surpassed by Apocalypse Now. A brilliant film. And I am psyched after reading this excellent review (thanks!) and now have to get this!
Aliens and The Abyss laserdisc sets were the only way I’m aware of back then to see the extended cuts before DVD. And both were THX Certified as was True Lies too. The Abyss was the first ever one certified at least in No America!
I also still have a BetaMax and my original ViewMaster projector...
I saw The Abyss in Dec when it had a one night showing in theaters and thought it looked and sounded great if not better compared to the original as I remembered. However I did notice that grain was all but gone. But it gained in image detail so it didn’t bother me and that film is more of a...
I too remember the original in the theater being very grainy in most of the film's dark scenes which just added to the tension as your eyes were constantly on the lookout for anything and everything. And then a scene or two would be less so and brighter to relieve some of the suspense. I liked...
While it may have a great back story it’s not a great film but an important film for its time IMHO
Rather hokey and driven by star power alone.
Its subject would be much more effectively handled in a few years later by Norman Lear on TV on many of his hit shows.
Curious- Is there muchfilm grain intact to get that image quality? I don't recall from seeing this theatrically and in my Twilight Time release for this to be a big budget visual treat and more akin to a goood road movie.
My favorite line which occurs in a lifeboat from Robert Hiches to Molly Brown is:
“And there'll be one less on this boat,
if you don’t shut that hole in your face!”
Thankfully that’s not cut!
It happened to me too. I had purchased the Family Guy Christmas special episode where Stewie goes to the North Pole many years ago. I wanted to watch it this past holiday and it was gone. And iTunes no longer sells individual Family Guy episodes. My only option I believe to see it was to...
Yet another film I was extremely disappointed in with the TCM print presented last summer. Now ordered and I think I need a job in my retirement to pay for all of these wonderful new treasures! Please give us Abel Gance’s Napoleon soon!!
Thanks and understood. But it must be a lot better than the original Blu which is still included and I get the streaming code for the 4K as well which looked great when I streamed it over the holidays.
Btw it is now no longer streaming for free but The Holiday is now effective 1/1 on Netflix-not...
Again why don’t you mention when this was released on 3D Blu -ray wide release instead of only some niche Panasonic release in a 3D review? And yet you mention every 2D Blu -ray and theatrical release and re-release known to man?
Interesting. I was on the fence with buying this one (which I streamed last week) as many reviewers were saying the PQ left a lot to be desired. However I trust the Master’s opinion here above all others and will now buy. It’s a classic.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I’ll take Pazuzu, Kokomo and Ennio Morricone any day over this pointless sequel.
*Sorry for butchering (actually spellcheck did but I should have proofed it!) one of the greatest 20th/21st century composers name- now fixed. Must have been too much...
Ok either way it wasn’t mentioned in the review. And it’s really the only way it should d be viewed as Cameron shot it that way and intended it to be viewed that way. I will stick with both my original 3D and Way of Water 3D as I already own the extended cut on Blu and unless it’s released on 3D...
Correction: A 3D version was initially offered for sale along with the Blu-day independently of buying a Panasonic display as the review implies. I know because I own it and do not have such a display.
Man! I agree on all your points What I was trying to say was The Abyss looked better than I remember when it played opening weekend at The Ziegfeld here in NY. Of course my seat wasn’t vibrating back then like the RPX theater I was in. And that last special effects processed shot does look bad-...
Based upon what I saw last night at The Abyss screening in RPX if anything like that then this will definitely be a reference disc. Cameron is on fire!
Unfortunately this film IMO sorely lacks being that it was directed by a Caucasian director and needs to be remade by a Black director-Spike Lee would do wonders. Like imagine if Spike Lee directed Schindler’s List then you’ll get my point.
Rather than the shifting aspect ratio percentages I’d like to know the percentage of scenes that lasted longer than 3 mins. I could have sworn this was a movie made by someone w ADD. However it was quite effective in making a long film appear shorter and gave it an edge of your seat pacing...
Well I for one am glad Sydney Pollack thought differntly and the director’s cut made for a more balanced film. The Streisand cut of course would have more of her but in this case I think “less is more.” Redford probably is tired of discussing it. Lol
And Doris Day in particular never got the respect she deserved as an actor as she like Frank Sinatra were primarily considered singers. She is sublime in this film especially the scene when she gets the lowdown about her son’s predicament. She could do everything drama, comedy, musical comedy...
I totally disagree. What about his child that he’s totally clueless about. How is that never explained? And how can I sympathize for someone who gave up his own daughter for his career?
Saw it too and will always remember it being so richly detailed in addition as it was a pristine print
But what I remember most is the reaction at intermission on people’s faces like wtf did I just watch? The sound and especially the music was impeccable too.
