USHE Announcement: Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection (Blu-ray)

Hmm. Well, I have bought three sets now, two as gifts. I suppose you can say it is something of a bargain if you like. I would have preferred to have Criterion quality for Criterion prices, however.

The credits may well have legal implications with the trade unions. I predicted that would be all they would fix, and it appears to be the case.

USHE Announcement: Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection (Blu-ray)

The Hitchcock collection is, IMHO, the most important Blu-ray title/box to date, and may well be the most important ever released. The best one can say is that the worst did not happen. But that seems small consolation for the damage that has been. It is very possible that these are the...

USHE Announcement: Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection (Blu-ray)

One strategy would be to put some effort into the eagerly anticipated titles but to use whatever they have lying around for the other titles. Given the unavailability of the titles in singles, this might be the game-theoretic way to make the most money: almost as many sales, smaller...

USHE Announcement: Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection (Blu-ray)

My guess: 1. If Sony had done this set, it would be beautiful, and there would have been no concerns about the cost. 2. If Criterion had done this set, it would also be quite superb, and the cost would have been less than what Universal spent. I have to see this as a Universal problem not a...

Nick, It would help if you can look at the final release and tell us if it looks the same to you. I very much appreciated your earlier reviews and look forward to hearing from you again on this and other subjects.

So far, all of these look promising. The Man Who Knew Too Much has too much magenta in the beaver caps. We will see how this pans out. However, if it is as consistent as it appears to be, I will be able to adjust my system accordingly I expect.

USHE Announcement: Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection (Blu-ray)

I am fairly encouraged by the DVDBeaver caps of Vertigo and Rear Window. The color in both seems much better. I saw Vertigo many times in original release with the original dye-transfer prints. Saw Rear Window in the reissue 1961 dye transfer. One of the things I am looking for in both...

USHE Announcement: Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection (Blu-ray)

I suspect that this is true. One of the reasons for bundling them is to get some revenue out of titles that might not stand on their own. They seem to have started with Psycho and there were hints that we would see The Birds last year, then they switched to the bundled approach. We also have...

I will post on the titles I feel competent to comment on as soon as I get my copy. I am a big fan of VistaVision and know those films very well.

I have had three DVD's go bad: Vertigo, Apollo 13, Spartacus (not the Criterion version). Notice a trend?

USHE Announcement: Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection (Blu-ray)

I was at San Juan Bautista on Sunday, looks just like it always did. There were signs up that they are showing Vertigo on the grass at dusk next Saturday 9/29. (The area where Madelyn runs from the stables to the church followed by Scottie.) I presume from a DVD. So this is one of the more...

No, not mine. Many people are interested in these things, especially for Vertigo I think. The Hitckcock film I would like to figure out the locations for someday is Family Plot (which happens to be one of my favorites of Hitckcock, for some reason). It was filmed in SF and LA but seems to...

USHE Announcement: Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection (Blu-ray)

Not sure about the second trip either, you think that Scotty might have been in a hurry. I know that in the 60's and 70's, 101 south was largely through the towns so it was a slow route, through Morgan Hill and Gilroy. I was on it a number of times to go to Monterey. So it might actually...

USHE Announcement: Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection (Blu-ray)

Thanks. It is perfectly reasonable to get from San Francisco to San Juan Batista and go through the tall trees along the way. You just don't use route 101 from SF. Instead, go down Route 1 (a scenic route along the coast), then cross over on 156 just south of Watsonville. The movie doesn't...

USHE Announcement: Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection (Blu-ray)

This is not correct. The "tall trees" that are seen twice in Vertigo are on highway 101/156. From Monterey, you take 101 North, through the tall trees, and 156 exits to San Juan Bautista/Hollister on the right. Exactly as seen in the film. If you look, there are also large boulders just...

I go regularly to the locations where Vertigo was filmed. Few have changed. This is, in my opinion, quite an important point about the metaphysics of the film. The biggest change is to the "McKittrick Hotel" on Gough and Eddy. It was torn down shortly after filming and is now a playground...

USHE Announcement: Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection (Blu-ray)

Yes, the forest scenes are in Big Basin. This makes sense in the narrative of the film because Big Basin is (roughly) on the way to Monterey. I have been there many times, indeed to all of the locations of Vertigo many times. There are guided tours you can take to the locations.

USHE Announcement: Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection (Blu-ray)

I have seen Vertigo at the Castro Theatre in San Francisco (in 70mm) any number of times since the restoration premiere there in 1996, it is featured every year or so. I saw it 3 times 3 weeks ago to full-house crowds. I also saw it innumerable times in 1958 and later in the 1960's. [Saw it...

+1 There could be an interesting discussion about copyright and the movies, I have a lot of opinions on what I consider to be a very complex matter. I have refrained from posting here on this matter, however, and the thread is no longer about the very interesting subject of the Hitchcock films...

USHE Announcement: Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection (Blu-ray)

The Birds always had poor opticals and the color balance was never good. One must remember this. Don't expect VistaVision or Paramount-quality special effects, this was filmed at Universal. The DCP seems to capture the original opticals and color pretty well. There are places (especially at...

I heard that. "Best Years" is a film that goes up in my opinion every time I see it. It is so fresh and timely as well as prescient. Any news about a Blu-ray as part of the Goldwyn/Warners deal? And is there anything new about Porgy and Bess as long as we are close to the subject of Goldwyn?

USHE Announcement: Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection (Blu-ray)

While I would call myself more of a pragmatist about these matters, I would like to point out that we are not asking for something that is at all impossible. Lots of other companies are doing excellent work on limited budgets, and there are a lot of marvelous catalog titles out there that...

Or we have very different ideas about what high fidelity is. I never considered optical mono sound to be high fidelity. Look at the specs for the Westrex and RCA Photophone formats. I was very taken with magnetic stereo sound once I heard it and never looked back. I loved the...

USHE Announcement: Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection (Blu-ray)

I think this is very likely. The studios have discovered that they get more overall profits by bundling these sets of catalog titles. We will continue to pay for all of them even though we only want a few. -- Universal has yet to release the Back to the Future trilogy in singles. --...
