Re: REDS - Beautifully written and, I agree with you. Not 100% aligned with you on CABARET but you make good points. It's never been a favorite of mine but then again, the only "musical" I adore is WEST SIDE STORY.
You eloquently stated how I feel about the film. It aspires for something deeper and subtler. I find it heartbreaking in the same way I feel about Au Hasard Balthazar.
I admire Lean’s films - he was a master epic craftsman. There are images of beauty that are epic and famous. His films - with the exception of Dr. Zhivago - rarely touch my heart.
To each their own. Overlong and overrated can apply to any of David Lean's films. I admire Beatty's ambition, passion and experimentation with form. It's not a perfect film - for many reasons - and it's not for everyone.
This is an important release of a movie that should have won Best Picture (some forgettable drivel titled CHARIOTS of FIRE somehow won.) A movie for adults with ambition and intellect directed by a star at the peak of his powers. Incredible cinematography by Storaro. I can't wait to see this...
