So, currently there are 32 blu-rays and 20 DVD's of his 52 films out there. Not counting the lost "Mountain Eagle" or the German version of "Murder" called "Mary" and the sound and silent "Blackmail" , which both count as 1 film each not 2.
Just watched Sabotage from Network U.K. It's region B locked. The picture and sound quality are quite nice, maybe a notch above their last release of Young and Innocent. Picture is stable with good grain and no noticeable film damage. Some mild contrast wavering and soft shots, but I think this...
Actually, it looks like the transfer for Sabotage will be the same as Young and Innocent. High definition transfer from original film elements, which probably means a print rather than a negative. Either way it beats waiting for Criterion.
Finally got my copy of Young and Innocent. Region B locked. Overall a very nice presentation, although there are some vertical scratches present and sometimes shots are a bit blurred. I'm sure a restoration would've eliminated at least some of this. Mostly it has good tonal range. Close ups are...

Sabotage (1936) coming to blu-ray June 1st from Network U.K. :D
Glad I have Region B capability since Criterion seems to be taking their sweet time releasing more Hitchcock films.
The French subtitles appear underneath the English titles when characters speak. It's not that distracting here, but annoying that they can't be turned off. When you select the option it says prohibited.
I think the film with no music in the box set is The Lodger or Downhill. Both of those...
Review of Easy Virtue (1927)
The 5th feature from Alfred Hitchcock is basically a dated melodrama from 1927. It has some creative camera shots and editing is inventive for it's day. Probably the least interesting of the 9 silents he made.
Picture quality is poor, because of the 16mm source...
I haven't received mine yet, but will comment when I do. Others confirmed the lack of music, which is odd, because all of these had scores in the restoration, sometimes performed live. I know the quality won't look like The Lodger or Downhill, but hoping for an improvement over the wretched...
Post 299. I have a complete list.
I didn't bother to list releases from Spain or France unless they are exclusive. Most are Region B locked. Not sure about the box set from France coming later this month.
U.S. Releases unless noted. Red titles not yet on blu-ray.
1925 - The Pleasure Garden
1927 - The Lodger - Network - U.K. (Region B locked)
1927 - Downhill - Divisa - Spain (Film is Region A & B playable)
1927 - The Ring
1928 - Easy Virtue (coming Oct 21 - Elephant Films France - Region B...
Network's BD of The Lodger is Region B locked, but looks fantastic. I'm order Y&I from them, as I want to support these and maybe they'll release more titles. I'm not waiting another year while the 9 silents tour the country in theaters. We have Downhill from Spain, which is playable on Region...
Looks like the wait for Jamaica Inn on blu-ray is worth it as the restoration work being done is extensive. Not one of my favorites, but I have to buy it because it's Hitchcock!

In other news...Criterion is...
May 6th will bring the final four Universal individual titles available to purchase including ultraviolet digital copies.
Rear Window, Vertigo, Psycho and The Birds
Only took them 18 months after the box set. Way to milk the U.S. fans!
Now how about a blu-ray box set of the 20 Hitchcock...
It's the biggest disappoinment in the set for me. Some shots look nice and clear, but most of the film has that 'mosquito noise' 'added grain' crap all over it. It's not unwatchable, but very sad to see what used to be a good looking film on DVD transferred like that.
Yes, this would have to be a multi company joint release for all 9 films to be in one box, but it can be done. Hell, throw in the talking version of Blackmail for an even 10!
Seems to me that the 9 restored silents would be an ideal opportunity for a box set release. I can't imagine people buying them one at a time. Hopefully, we'll get Young and Innocent, Sabotage, Secret Agent first. The Lodger (and Downhill) is already out there in a Region B release.
The release date for these individual releases has been pushed up a month. Now coming May 6th.
Rear Window, Vertigo, Psycho (reissue) and The Birds (no pre-order up for this one yet).
I meant to list these 'final four' individual releases last week when they were $13.99 each. The Birds IS coming the same day, but the preorder isn't available yet.
I want them all on blu-ray (naturally). A review (besides mine) of Downhill is up on another site. http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film4/blu-ray_reviews_60/downhill_blu-ray.htm
Here's another rave review of Foreign Correspondent. http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/10313/foreign_correspondent.html
My review of Downhill (1927) from Spain. Movie is playable on Region A & B. The extras are Region B locked.
This is the restored version from 2012. It has color tinting and a piano score. It is very sharp most of the time, but
there's a few brief shots that look like the source was of a lesser...
U.S. Releases unless noted. In chronological order...
1927 - The Lodger - Network - U.K. (Region B locked)
1927 - Downhill - ITV - Spain (Region B locked - assumed)
1934 - The Man Who Knew Too Much - Criterion
1935 - The 39 Steps - Criterion
1938 - The Lady Vanishes - Criterion
1940 - Rebecca -...
The single release of Marnie is identical so I don't see any reason this would be different but would love to see it fixed.
Apart from the deluxe packaging, the inclusion of To Catch a Thief is a nice addition.
