Blu Ray drive for Mac Pro

IIRC the latest versions of libredrive in the makemkv suite, work straight out of the box for many Pioneer bluray/4Kbluray drives without any firmware modifications. Essentially libredrive circumvents a lot of the key revocation stuff of aacs, essentially making it largely drm-free (like dvd)...

(On a tangent). Ironically, there exists officially released Sony bluray mod movie discs which do not have any encryption on them. Apparently Sony's home video division person(s) who handles the mod bluray titles, does not want to pay any further royalty fees to even get the proper AACS...

The burned bd-r discs I have come across over the years, usually have a blackish looking tint on the data side.

Blu Ray drive for Mac Pro

(More generally). I have had many experiences where a particular dvd/bluray disc is not recognized on one dvd/bluray drive, while a second or third different drive (from a different manufacturer) recognized these same dvd/bluray discs as if nothing was wrong.

The type of nasty scratches which are usually fatal and caused uncorrectable read errors, were scratches (or damages) which were circular concentric. If you know how the data is encoded on the disc surface, you will understand why such concentric circular scraches are fatal on cd, dvd, bluray...

Blu Ray drive for Mac Pro

I've found scratches are highly variable, when it comes to ripping. I have many discs which looked really scratched up, where they were previously library copies which were taken out of circulation. Oddly enough, about 99% of these scratched up ex-library dvd discs could be ripped entirely...

In practice, I have found that getting a computer program to recognize a type of pattern that isn't extremely precise, is not always easy to write code for. Not surprising at all that a program like makemkv, dvdfab, etc ... is taking a lot of time churning away at such a task. In contrast, I...

Blu Ray drive for Mac Pro

One has to remember programs like makemkv, etc ... were designed as general purpose dvd (or bluray) disc rippers. A lot of the stuff running behind the scenes, is just to make things where the user only has to click a button on two. So a lot of the stuff I've been talking about for a long time...

Blu Ray drive for Mac Pro

Definitely. I don't know about recent versions. In the older versions of makemkv I used in the past, I read the error/debug messages to figure out what it might be doing. (Anydvd does this too, by dumping the error/debug mesages into a log file). It is definitely not "passive".

Sometimes this slow reading spinning happens almost randomly. There were many times where the first time I put the disc into the drive, it was spinning at a slow speed. Ejecting the disc and loading it again, the drive was spinning at the normal fast speed. (Sometimes this had to be several...

Blu Ray drive for Mac Pro

The disc spinning at slow speeds, happens every now and then. Computer dvd/bluray drives spin at much higher speeds than a typical standalone dvd or bluray player. Typically slowdowns happen when the drive is getting too many uncorrectable errors on the first read, and just do a re-read...

Another option is trying another ripping program, and see if it can extract the entire iso. (Such as the old dvd decrypter). If it gets stuck at a spot with constant re-reads, it might be a defective disc.

Other than telling makmkv's developers (on their own forums) about this possibly rare problem, just hope they can fix this error in the next update.

Sounds like either an authoring error for that particular dvd disc, and/or makemkv came across something which was accidental and shouldn't have be a problem in principle. Most Warner dvd discs manufactured after 2010 didn't have any extra baskecase drm.

Is this the double-sided flipper disc version released back in the mid 2000s? If it is, flipper discs of this type are a lot more prone to playback problems and/or defects.

This ^ has been the easiest way for many years. Especially when there are more than one pressings where the real playlist have different numbers. For example, such as one pressing made for the retail bluray (sold at wallymart, target, etc ...) and another bluray pressing made for redbox...

Blu Ray drive for Mac Pro

If you demand absolute accuracy in the video/audio data being repackaged into an mkv container, you would have to find another program which does this. Another option is to look up the technical specifications details of the mkv container and also the details of mpeg2 and other video codecs...

Blu Ray drive for Mac Pro

Occasionally I have come across makemkv dropping segments. What is the exact algorithm doing this, can only be inferred if one doesn't have access to the original source code of makemkv. When I played back these particular *.mkv files with dropped segments, some video/audio was missing that...

Factually I can say that the dvd region locking mechanism appears to mostly function by hardware. Years ago I looked at the dvd's generic css drm system, by writing some of my own computer code to understand how the official authentication mechanism functions. I've ran my own dvd...

Blu Ray drive for Mac Pro

As far as I can tell from reading some unofficial technical documents/data and looking at the behavior of ripping programs, the bluray region locking mechanism appears to be done as software. In contrast, the region locking mechanism for dvd is actually done at the hardware level. Basically if...

There's ways of converting a standard internal cd/dvd drive, into an "external drive". Basically boxes which have a sata -> usb2 (or usb3) converter. In practice when it comes to a lot of disc ripping, I have found that standard internal cd/dvd drives are somewhat more reliable than...

Sometimes PAL "labeled" dvd discs are not actually really PAL. If the video data is stored as progressive frames, the dvd player will just use a different pulldown pattern to play it on a PAL tv screen.

Blu Ray drive for Mac Pro

IIRC, region coding on bluray discs is primarily at the software level. This is how anydvd and dvdfab appear to handle it (ie. very easy to bypass) when ripping. In contrast, dvd had the region coding done at the hardware level. (Initially it was harder to bypass with rpc phase 2, but brute...

I've felt this way on and off over the years. Typically this coincided when a particular musical genre/niche played itself out, and/or the market was flooded with tons of mediocre or outright garbage then-new titles. Back in the day, it wasn't easy to "sort" through all this mediocre / garbage...

The one band which really screwed the pooch on live albums, was Pearl Jam. Back in the day, I use to listen to their unofficial live album which was released over the three cd singles of Dissident in 1994. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dissident_(song)#Track_listings Though by the time it...

Out of the older/classic bands, I only buy new albums from Iron Maiden. Though only their newer studio albums, and not their live albums. I find Iron Maiden's live albums over the past two decades, sound very "tired" and borderline boring. It sounds like they're just "going through the...

Basically if I am not willing to sit down and listen to a particular title from start to finish on a standalone stereo with my full undivided attention, then the cd version will likely end up collecting dust on my shelves and never listened to again. Even at $10 a pop or less, I'm not...

When it comes to buying music cd nowadays, I have a very rigorous process I go through before I make any actual purchasing decisions. (This is largely to minimize clutter and other junk). I frequently listen to entire albums on youtube, though most of them I don't listen to more than once or...

My experience is almost the opposite. Most of the stuff I listened to a lot when I was younger (or as a kid/preteen), is largely unlistenable to me nowadays. Ironically the stuff I listen to more than hundred times nowadays, was frequently the exact same stuff I absolutely despised or outright...

Back in the day I was looking at ripping my entire cd collection to the computer. Though in the end, I came to the realization that I hardly ever listened to most of my cds. For more than 98% of my collection, I only ever listened to the cds once or twice. I only ever listened to a few dozen...
