Could the original, unaltered STAR WARS be on its way to Blu-ray?

There's a rumour that, before the SEs came out on dvd, George tasked ILM with experimenting with replacing the puppet Yoda with a CG model; so the story goes, the ILM guys quietly and intentionally botched it so that George would change his mind. :)

Could the original, unaltered STAR WARS be on its way to Blu-ray?

I'm passionate about movies, and about Raiders, and have found your comparisons very illuminating (see what I did there? :p). That said, it is a little aggravating to come into the Star Wars thread and see piles of posts about Raiders. I'm not knocking your views, but I do think they'll get more...

    Isn't there a Raiders thread?

Could the original, unaltered STAR WARS be on its way to Blu-ray?

As far as I'm concerned, the more bootlegs of these films that keep popping up, the more it becomes clear to Disney/Lucasfilm that they're leaving money on the table. So bring 'em on.

Could the original, unaltered STAR WARS be on its way to Blu-ray?

Lucas's memory is either malfunctioning or changing according to his current whims. A good example of this is his commentary on THX-1138: he says that THX is 'birth-born', while his roomate LUH-3417 is 'of clinical origin' - even though the film itself says the exact opposite...

Identical experience here. Watched them on VHS in the late 80s and thought, "darn. I guess you need to be a kid to really enjoy these films." Then I saw the WS laserdiscs and BAM! I was six years old again. :)

Could the original, unaltered STAR WARS be on its way to Blu-ray?

I always feel bad for those kids who are sat down to watch the prequels with their parents and then told, "see that guy? That's Jar Jar. Isn't he stupid? He wrecks the whole movie!" I let my son come to his own conclusions watching the prequels, and he loved them, Jar Jar and all. He was a bit...

Could the original, unaltered STAR WARS be on its way to Blu-ray?

Lucas very publicly stated after RotS came out in 2005 that the story was over, that it was about the rise, fall, and redemption of Anakin Skywalker, and that story was told, and there would be no 7-8-9. Any outline he made for the new sequel trilogy came from the same place that...

Could the original, unaltered STAR WARS be on its way to Blu-ray?

I don't think that personal judgment really enters into it. Once a creative work is released, it belongs to the world and should be preserved. Like imagine if, when music first became available on a digital medium, Paul McCartney decided to add a kazoo orchestra to all of The Beatles' work...

Could the original, unaltered STAR WARS be on its way to Blu-ray?

And you also now know that Jabba's a pathetic wimp to be (literally) walked all over. The way I see it is, if Lucas wanted Greedo to shoot first back in '77, he could have. If he wanted to replace the perfect line "bring my shuttle" with Vader asking for a welcoming parade aboard the Executor...

Could the original, unaltered STAR WARS be on its way to Blu-ray?

This. To new viewers of the SE trilogy, Jabba is a punk to be laughed at. Totally wrong. Arguably the scene as shot in '76 -even with the human actor or a stop-motion creature- would have had the same effect. But as you say, it's a cut that needed to stay on the floor if Jabba was to be...

A deal was quietly made to give Star Wars to Disney, so this man's article holds no more weight with me than did the original article. Nobody knows nuffin'!

Could the original, unaltered STAR WARS be on its way to Blu-ray?

It sure makes sense from a marketing standpoint, though: Restore brand faith in the community. Dispel fears that Disney-era Star Wars will be all fairies, dwarves, and theme songs by Elton John. Get butts in seats for Episode VII. [/list] I don't trust that article either, but I do suspect...

Could the original, unaltered STAR WARS be on its way to Blu-ray?

Therein lies the distinction! If Lucas wanted Greedo to fire, he could have. If he wanted Luke to say "you were lucky to get out of there," he could have. If he wanted Vader to shout "NOOOOOO!!!", he could have. The floodgates of alteration were opened, and Lucas went bananas. Repeatedly. I...

Could the original, unaltered STAR WARS be on its way to Blu-ray?

Admission #1: Me n' everybody else in Grade 2 watched that when it aired, and we thought it was pretty cool. Admission #2: I cried a little when Chewie's son found his bantha plushy had had its head twisted off by a stormtrooper. :(

Could the original, unaltered STAR WARS be on its way to Blu-ray?

Actually, my big problem is the first love scene between THX and LUH: LUH: They're watching us now. THX: No one can see us. In the original, we then cut to the next day. THX walks into a room where there are a bunch of guys sitting on benches. They all turn and look at him, and THX nervously...

This one really makes my blood boil, since some of those changes actually change the plot somewhat.

As regards who would buy them, it's worth asking how many of us rushed out to buy the crappy 2006 dvd release of the original cuts - I know I did - even though we already had the 2004 SE dvds sitting on our shelves.

Could the original, unaltered STAR WARS be on its way to Blu-ray?

Was it definitely the '81 re-release and not the '78 re-release that included the "Episode IV - A New Hope" subtitle? I recall seeing that subtitle on the big screen back in the day and me and my friends wondering how the hell there were three other movies out there that no one had ever heard...

Could the original, unaltered STAR WARS be on its way to Blu-ray?

Not to go off on a tangent here, but it's nice to see that someone else recognizes how the re-editing of THX 1138 completely messes up the narrative. I'm fine with the nice new effects, but I'm not fine with a roomful of people watching THX and LUH get busy on a monitor and not calling the...

Could the original, unaltered STAR WARS be on its way to Blu-ray?

This is my thought, as well. I don't hate the Special Editions(es?), and I think Lucas truly has the right to revise them whenever he wants (hell, I might even buy 'em). BUT: he has an obligation and a responsibility to preserve and make available the original versions (which I want, above all)...

That subtitle was the one change in the whole trilogy that I had the least problem with, actually. I guess I just like the openings of the films to match. :P
