As far as I'm concerned, the more bootlegs of these films that keep popping up, the more it becomes clear to Disney/Lucasfilm that they're leaving money on the table. So bring 'em on.

Lucas's memory is either malfunctioning or changing according to his current whims. A good example of this is his commentary on THX-1138: he says that THX is 'birth-born', while his roomate LUH-3417 is 'of clinical origin' - even though the film itself says the exact opposite...

Identical experience here. Watched them on VHS in the late 80s and thought, "darn. I guess you need to be a kid to really enjoy these films." Then I saw the WS laserdiscs and BAM! I was six years old again. :)

Actually, my big problem is the first love scene between THX and LUH: LUH: They're watching us now. THX: No one can see us. In the original, we then cut to the next day. THX walks into a room where there are a bunch of guys sitting on benches. They all turn and look at him, and THX nervously...

This one really makes my blood boil, since some of those changes actually change the plot somewhat. :angry:

As regards who would buy them, it's worth asking how many of us rushed out to buy the crappy 2006 dvd release of the original cuts - I know I did - even though we already had the 2004 SE dvds sitting on our shelves.

Was it definitely the '81 re-release and not the '78 re-release that included the "Episode IV - A New Hope" subtitle? I recall seeing that subtitle on the big screen back in the day and me and my friends wondering how the hell there were three other movies out there that no one had ever heard...

This is my thought, as well. I don't hate the Special Editions(es?), and I think Lucas truly has the right to revise them whenever he wants (hell, I might even buy 'em). BUT: he has an obligation and a responsibility to preserve and make available the original versions (which I want, above all)...

That subtitle was the one change in the whole trilogy that I had the least problem with, actually. I guess I just like the openings of the films to match. :P
