I watched "The Swan" again last night on my Pioneer DVD player, which upscales, and it was glorious. A beautiful remaster that could easily be taken up to Blu-ray. I pray that it joins the series soon.
I like the idea of Warners doing more "specific year" sets, like their 1939 set. The reality of that happening, though, is probably very slim. Billy is right that we should love and enjoy what has already been made available - though I'm sure WA is going to grace us with at least a few of the...
"A Woman's Face" is very good - sadly the DVD (part of Warner's Joan Crawford Volume 2 set) is now OOP. Maybe it will be reissued in one of the budget TCM sets.
An entire Barbara Stanwyck BOX would be most welcome, ideally including "Ball of Fire", "My Reputation" (said to be one of her favourites), "Executive Suite" and the fun melodrama "East Side, West Side".
"Ziegfeld Girl" is notable for it's amazing cast (Lana in her first dramatic role of any substance) and of course the wonderful Judy. It was fashioned as a sequel-of-sorts for "The Great Ziegfeld", even re-using the 'Pretty Girl is Like a Melody' footage by swapping Virginia Bruce for Judy as...
I love that version of J&H, although Spencer was never entirely satisfied with how it came off, according to Katharine Hepburn in her book. Apparently he wanted one actress to play both of the women (which would have been fascinating) and it was Hepburn who he originally had in mind to play them.
I can see LMOLM coming to Blu very soon. I spun the DVD upscaled a few weeks ago and was very surprised. The optimist in me would also love to see "Lucky Me" (Day's first 'Scope film) on Blu-ray but I may be in the minority there...
After spinning my DVD of "Scaramouche" on an upscaling player a couple of nights ago, I'd love to see the film make the transition to Blu. It would be truly stunning.
My personal favourite Janie film is "Nancy Goes to Rio". Jane with the added glamour of Ann Sothern, plus zesty Carmen Miranda. Who can resist? "A Date with Judy" runs a close second, but there's also "Royal Wedding" with Janie kicking up her heels with Fred Astaire in the "Ev'ry Night at...
Jane Powell was always more easygoing in front of the camera. Kathryn was quite mannered, as though she were on the stage. I just think Jane Powell was more vivacious, and infinitely more likeable on the screen.
Although I think Ann Blyth, his "Great Caruso" co-star, was the exception to that. She has great memories of him, and I'd have loved to have seen what their reunion in "The Student Prince" would have been like, if not for the incidents offscreen which led to Lanza being fired from the film.
From what I've read, Ms Grayson had a reputation for being somewhat 'prickly' with her male co-stars (especially with Lanza). She essentially inherited Jeanette MacDonald's 'mantle' at MGM and although her career was quite brief she was a lovely asset to the films in which she starred. Later...
