Making or taping are both illegal as they both infringe on copyright.This is regardless whether you sell a copy or not.There isn't a person on the planet who has never infringed on someones copyright.

The general release 35mm print was also shorter than the 3 strip Cinerama version in that the pre-credit war sequence was omitted. Just like the finale sequence in How The West Was Won which was also deleted from the non road show screenings.
