You were almost correct about the number of total sets there would be as singles-- there was the first half-hour season (1955-56) that was presented as one release, then the next 14 (1956-70) were done in the volumes (28 sets), and the last five (1970-75) were single releases once more, for a...
1985 Jeopardy! ad from that Herald-Journal, when the show as we knew it for more than 3.5 decades w/the late, great Alex Trebek was in its 2nd year (it stayed at the same time slot all the time on 13 WLOS, and IIRC, still does w/the newer people); does not have Alex Trebek in it, though, but...
I certainly agree-- however, a couple of my favorites of that time (The Untouchables and M Squad) did have some violence, but in the case of those, such violence added to the story (and it wasn't gratuitous like now, or graphic; hardly any language either).
But even so, violence for the sake...
That's what I thought! You made the right choice in getting that omnibus-- IMO, purchasing the first full seasonal, and then the volumes of the next three, would have taken more money and time (first purchasing, and then waiting for them to be with you), whereas this omnibus can have you...
Glad you have all of Gunsmoke right at your fingertips-- the way you describe it, no wonder it became one of the true classics of CBS, and of broader television!
And I feel the same way about the CBS-owned shows that I like (The Streets of San Francisco, Have Gun, Will Travel, and The Untouchables).
One thing about that Gunsmoke all-in-one: is it longer and wider than the footprint of all the seasonal releases (regular and volume) put together, or is it...
Another good question-- I know that at least the first go of Hogan's Heroes has it (outside of the B/W pilot), so I would imagine that those Gunsmoke seasons would have it (might be incorrect, though).
I think that is a very likely one-- after all, if you're a Gunsmoke fan, and you can have it all on DVD (and not have to bother w/the classic television cable/satellite networks and commercials thereto), why wouldn't you jump at the chance?
Which Steve Forrest would be in as well, as gangster Art Styles, who takes a schoolteacher hostage while he watches out the schoolteacher's window for a clear shot at a witness that Stone and Keller are trying to protect.
And there have been bigger releases than that, according to him-- one being a Star Trek release that had somewhat over 200 discs (all the series, at the very least [outside of the animated series] and the feature films; that's just what I heard in this clip [I might be incorrect]).
I'm sure the same thing was said by a lot of others about not only that, but also about Michael Douglas leaving from The Streets of San Francisco at the end of the fourth go, and the late Richard Hatch coming in for the fifth and final one.
From EBay: a peek inside three of the multi-season collections made of Gunsmoke (the first one [Seasons 1-4] with the first four half-hour gos; the second one [Seasons 5-7] with the remaining half-hour gos, and the first hour go; and the third one [Seasons 8-9] with the second and third of the...
